Full Description
Ninh Binh countryside by vintage open jeep
Ninh Binh lies about 90 km south of Hanoi and is often called the inland Ha Long Bay, because steep limestone towers rise straight out of flat green rice fields. The best way to feel this landscape is on the back roads, and that is where the open jeep comes into its own. Without windows or a roof you smell the paddies, hear the ducks and see farmers, water buffalo and small temples along the way.
Your driver picks you up from your hotel lobby in Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An, at 8:00 or for the afternoon tour at about noon. Between the main sights he follows lanes that buses cannot use, stopping where the light is good for photos. The ride is bumpy in places, so sit back and enjoy the open air; in the hot months a hat and sunscreen are essential.
Bich Dong Pagoda, a temple in the cliff
Bich Dong Pagoda sits a few kilometres from Tam Coc at the foot of a limestone mountain and dates back to the early fifteenth century. It is made of three temples on different levels: the lower pagoda at the entrance, the middle pagoda set inside a cave, and the upper pagoda reached by stone steps near the top of the cliff. Local tradition calls it the second most beautiful cave under the southern sky.
Allow about 40 minutes to explore. From the upper levels you look down on lotus ponds and rice fields framed by karst peaks, one of the calmest views in Ninh Binh. The steps are uneven and can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip. Bich Dong is an active place of worship, so dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees and speak quietly in the shrines.
Trang An boat ride through the caves
The Trang An Landscape Complex became Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site in 2014. Small sampans rowed by local villagers glide along the Sao Khe River and its side channels, through low river caves and past temples that can only be reached by water. The standard routes last about two to three hours, and the stillness of the water between the cliffs is the memory most visitors take home.
If you are asking whether Trang An is worth visiting, most travellers say it is the highlight of Ninh Binh. On this tour your driver takes you to the pier and waits while you join the boat; the boat ticket is bought at the pier on the day and each boat carries a small group of passengers. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water, as most of the route is in the open.
Mua Cave viewpoint and the Lying Dragon
Mua Cave is a small cave at the foot of Ngoa Long, the Lying Dragon mountain, but people come for the climb above it. Around 500 stone steps lead up the ridge to a stone dragon and a small shrine, and the view from the top takes in the bends of the Ngo Dong River, the rice fields of Tam Coc and rows of karst peaks. The climb takes most people 20 to 30 minutes.
The best time to visit Mua Cave is late afternoon, when the light softens and the paddies glow, which is why the afternoon start of this tour is so popular. From May to July the lotus pond at the foot of the mountain is in bloom. The Mua Cave entrance ticket is bought on site. After the climb your jeep takes you back to your hotel through the countryside, arriving about six hours after pickup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a small-group jeep tour with a local driver rather than a fully private guided tour. Tell us your group size when you book and our team will confirm the seating arrangement on WhatsApp.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The three main sights stay the same, but the driver is flexible about photo stops and time on the country roads. The order can change with the weather and the boat queues.
How many people fit in the jeep?
The vintage jeep carries a small number of passengers in open seats, so it feels personal. Share your group size when booking and we will advise.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price, and the boat and Mua Cave tickets are paid on site.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at your hotel in Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc or Trang An are included.
What is included?
Hotel pickup and drop-off, the vintage open jeep with a local driver who speaks basic English, the countryside ride, the visit to Bich Dong Pagoda, stops at the Trang An pier and Mua Cave, and bottled water. Boat and Mua Cave tickets, meals and personal expenses are not included.
How long is the tour?
About six hours: 8:00 to about 13:30 for the morning tour, or about 12:00 to 18:00 for the sunset tour.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children who can manage stairs enjoy the jeep and the boat. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility because of the steps at Mua Cave and Bich Dong and the bumpy ride.
What should I bring?
Cash for the boat and Mua Cave tickets, comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water and a light rain jacket in the wet season.
What is the best time of day and season?
The afternoon tour gives the best light at Mua Cave. The harvest season in late May and early June turns the paddies golden, and October to April is drier and cooler.
Where can we eat halal food?
Halal restaurants are limited in Ninh Binh; vegetarian and seafood dishes are easy to find in Tam Coc. Meals are not included, so ask us for suggestions near your hotel.
