Full Description
Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam
Hoa Lu was the capital of the Dai Co Viet kingdom from 968 to 1010, under the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, before the court moved north to Thang Long, today's Hanoi. The rulers chose this valley because the limestone mountains formed natural walls around it. Little remains of the palaces, but two temples rebuilt in the seventeenth century honour the Dinh and Le kings, with carved stone dragons, lacquered altars and quiet courtyards.
Our guide spends about an hour and a half here, telling the story of the first independent dynasties and how this small valley defended the country. The temples sit between rice fields and karst peaks, and the setting is a calm start after the drive from Hanoi. If you are looking for a Hoa Lu day trip from Hanoi that also includes the boat rides and Mua Cave, this tour combines all of them.
Tam Coc boat ride on the Ngo Dong River
Tam Coc means three caves, and the boat route along the Ngo Dong River passes through all three: Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba, low tunnels cut by the river through the limestone. Local rowers, many of them women from the nearby villages, often row with their feet, and the trip takes about one and a half to two hours there and back between rice fields and steep cliffs.
The best time to visit Tam Coc is late May to early June, when the rice along the river turns gold before the harvest, though the scenery is green and beautiful for most of the year. Each sampan carries a few passengers, and our guide arranges the boat so you simply step aboard. Bring a hat and sunscreen; the tour also provides a traditional conical hat or a raincoat depending on the weather.
Trang An Landscape Complex, the alternative boat route
If you prefer, you can choose the Trang An boat route instead of Tam Coc; just tell us after booking, as a small supplement is paid locally. Trang An is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2014 as Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural site. The rowing boats follow the Sao Khe River through a chain of water caves and stop at island temples reached only by boat.
Many travellers ask which is better, Tam Coc or Trang An. Tam Coc is shorter and runs past rice fields, while Trang An is longer, wilder and has more caves, so it suits those who want a deeper boat experience. Either way you spend about two hours on the water with a local rower, surrounded by limestone cliffs, birdsong and the slow sound of the oars.
Mua Cave viewpoint above Tam Coc
Mua Cave sits at the foot of Ngoa Long mountain, whose name means the Lying Dragon. From the cave, about 500 stone steps climb the ridge to a stone dragon and a small shrine at the top. The view is the one you see on postcards of Ninh Binh: the Ngo Dong River snaking through Tam Coc's rice fields between rows of limestone peaks. Most people climb in 20 to 30 minutes.
On this tour you reach Mua Cave in the afternoon, when the light softens, and our guide gives you around an hour for the climb and photos. The steps are steep and narrow in places, so wear proper shoes. From May to July the lotus pond at the base flowers in pink and white, a lovely place to rest before the bus returns to Hanoi.
Ninh Binh villages and the countryside ride
Ninh Binh lies about 90 km south of Hanoi, around two hours by road, and the drive itself shows how the Red River Delta changes from city suburbs to rice country. On the way you stop for about 20 minutes at a rest area. In Ninh Binh, between the boat and Mua Cave, the tour includes an optional short ride by bicycle through a local village, past fish ponds, duck farms and family temples.
If you would rather not cycle, you can stroll around the village or relax at the restaurant until the group returns. This break is a good chance to see daily rural life up close and to understand why Ninh Binh is called the inland Ha Long Bay. The bus then takes you back to the Old Quarter, arriving around 19:00 to 19:30.

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option; the Trang An supplement is paid locally.
