Full Description

Hoa Lu ancient capital and its royal temples

Your first stop, after about two and a half hours on the road with a short rest break, is Hoa Lu, the capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010. The Dinh and Early Le dynasties ruled the young kingdom of Dai Co Viet from this valley, protected on all sides by limestone mountains, before the capital moved to Thang Long, today's Hanoi.

Two temples, rebuilt in the seventeenth century on the old palace grounds, honour the Dinh and Le kings. You cross stone bridges and courtyards guarded by carved dragons and enter halls with gilded altars and ancient stone thrones, while the guide explains the history of the first independent dynasties. A Hoa Lu day trip from Hanoi often feels rushed, but on this tour you have about 45 minutes here before moving on.

Trang An boat ride, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The heart of the day is the boat ride through the Trang An Landscape Complex, listed by UNESCO in 2014 as Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site. Local villagers row small sampans along the Sao Khe River and its channels, through a chain of water caves and past island temples that can only be reached by boat. The route takes about two and a half hours, with limestone cliffs, tropical plants and the sound of the oars around you.

Is Trang An worth visiting? For most travellers it is the most memorable part of a trip to northern Vietnam outside Ha Long Bay, calmer and greener than many expect. On this tour the guide arranges your boat at the pier; the Trang An boat ticket itself is not included and is bought on the day. Each boat carries a small group, and life jackets are provided.

Mua Cave viewpoint above Tam Coc

Around 16:00 you reach Mua Cave at the foot of Ngoa Long, the Lying Dragon mountain. About 500 stone steps lead up the ridge to a stone dragon and a small shrine, and the panorama from the top shows the Ngo Dong River winding through the rice fields of Tam Coc between lines of limestone peaks. It is the view that has made Ninh Binh famous, and the late-afternoon light is ideal for photos.

Most people reach the top in 20 to 30 minutes, so take your time and wear shoes with good grip. The best time to visit Mua Cave is from late May to early June for golden rice and from May to July for the lotus pond in bloom at the foot of the mountain. Your Mua Cave entrance ticket is included, and after the climb the limousine van heads back to Hanoi.

The VIP limousine journey and village ride

Ninh Binh lies about 90 km south of Hanoi, around two hours by expressway in good traffic, and the comfort of the vehicle matters on a long day. The VIP limousine van has wide reclining seats, more legroom and fewer passengers than a standard bus, so you arrive rested and return relaxed. Road tolls and parking are included, and our driver stops for a 15 to 20 minute break each way.

Before lunch there is an optional ride of about 30 minutes by bicycle along quiet lanes near the restaurant, past lakes, a small waterfall and rice fields. If you prefer, stay at the restaurant and enjoy the valley views. Lunch is a buffet of Vietnamese and Ninh Binh dishes, with vegetarian options; halal food is limited in Ninh Binh, so tell us your needs when booking.
