Ha Long Bay, the UNESCO-listed bay of limestone islands
Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province holds around 1,600 limestone islands and islets rising from emerald water, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Many visitors ask whether a Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi is worth it. If you only have one day, it is: you see the towers, sail through them and still have time to swim and paddle.
The bay is about 150 kilometres east of Hanoi, and the expressway drive takes roughly two and a half hours each way when you take the Hanoi option. The best time to visit Ha Long Bay is spring and autumn, when skies are clearest. Summer and weekends are busier, so an early start helps.
Sung Sot Cave, the Surprise Cave
Sung Sot Cave sits on Bo Hon Island and is one of the largest caves in the bay. It is reached by a short climb of steps from the landing, and it opens into two vast chambers with lit stalactites and rock formations that guides link to animals and legends. The name means Surprise Cave, because the second chamber is far bigger than the first.
The visit takes about an hour, including the walk up and back and the lookout at the cave mouth, which is a fine place to photograph the surrounding islands. The steps are uneven, so wear shoes with grip. Entrance fees are included in every option.
Luon Cave and kayaking in Ha Long Bay
Luon Cave is a low tunnel through a limestone island that leads to a hidden lagoon ringed by cliffs. On a Ha Long Bay kayaking tour you paddle a two-person kayak, or sit in a bamboo boat rowed by a local, and pass through the arch when the tide allows. The water inside is calm and green.
About an hour is set aside for this stop. You need no experience: the paddling is gentle and life jackets are provided. If you prefer not to paddle, the bamboo boat is an easy alternative, and both give a very different view from the deck of the cruise ship.
Titop Island, swimming and a viewpoint
Titop Island is named after the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited the bay in 1962 with Ho Chi Minh. It has a crescent-shaped beach with safe, shallow water for swimming, and a stairway of several hundred steps up to a lookout over dozens of islands.
You have around an hour here. Swim first or climb first, whichever suits you: the view from the top is the best overview of the bay you will get on a day cruise. Bring swimwear and a towel. Afterwards you return to the boat for tea, fruit and light snacks while the boat heads back at sunset.

Is hotel pickup included?
On the From Hanoi options, yes: return transfer from your Old Quarter hotel is included. On the Ha Long port options you meet us at Tuan Chau Marina and there is no transfer from Hanoi.
How long is the Ha Long Bay day tour?
The cruise itself is about seven hours. With the Hanoi transfer the whole day runs about 13 to 14 hours, returning to the Old Quarter at around 9:00 PM.
What is the difference between the options?
Options differ by where you start (Hanoi hotel or Ha Long port), and by the cruise: a deluxe cruise with a set-menu lunch or a luxury cruise with a buffet lunch and a jacuzzi on board. The caves, kayaking and Titop Island are the same.
