Along the way you visit the Red Sand Dunes, the fishing village with its round basket boats and the shallow Fairy Stream. Full Description
White Sand Dunes by quad bike
The White Sand Dunes, or Bau Trang, are the largest dune field around Mui Ne, a pale desert landscape of shifting ridges that reaches far inland from the coast. Climbing them on foot in soft sand takes time and effort, which is why a quad ride is the best way to see them properly. On this tour the quad is included: a trained quad driver takes two guests per quad up to the highest ridges for panoramic views and photos.
The ride makes two stops on the dunes and then runs down to the lotus lake, where pink flowers float in front of the white sand in season. At sunrise the sand glows pink and gold; in the afternoon the shadows sharpen every ripple. Sand sliding is not included, but tickets can be bought at the top if you want to try it.
Red Sand Dunes (Doi Cat Do)
Close to Mui Ne village and right by the sea, the Red Sand Dunes are lower and gentler than the white dunes, coloured a warm orange-red by iron oxide. You can walk up from the roadside in a few minutes, and from the top you see the coastline curve towards Phan Thiet and the fishing fleet anchored in the bay.
On the sunset departure the jeep reaches the red dunes last, so you watch the sun go down over the sand, often the most memorable moment of the day. On the sunrise departure you stop here after the white dunes, with time for photos of the beach road on the way. Is the Red Sand Dunes area worth visiting? It is small, but the colour and the sea views make it a favourite.
Mui Ne Fishing Village
The fishing village is where Mui Ne's working life still happens. The harbour is packed with wooden fishing boats and round woven basket boats, and in the morning fishermen bring the catch ashore, where it is sorted and sold on the sand. The smell of the sea, the colours of the boats and the activity on the beach make it a lively stop.
Your driver stops at the viewpoint above the bay and gives you time to walk down to the beach market. Morning is the busiest time, so the sunrise departure sees the most activity, while in the afternoon you see boats being prepared and nets mended. It is a short stop, about 20 minutes, but one that adds real local character to the tour.
Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)
The Fairy Stream flows ankle-deep over soft sand through a small canyon of eroded sandstone. One bank is lined with palms and bamboo, the other with red, orange and white formations shaped by rain and wind. You walk barefoot along the stream for about half a mile, admiring the trees and rock shapes, then walk back.
On the sunset departure the stream is the first stop, before the heat of the dunes; on the sunrise departure it comes last, when the morning light is still soft. There are toilets at the Fairy Stream car park, and you can leave your shoes in the jeep. It is an easy walk for most ages, and children usually love splashing through the shallow water.
