Full Description

White Sand Dunes at sunrise

The White Sand Dunes, known locally as Bau Trang, spread across a wide inland area north-east of Mui Ne, about 45 minutes by jeep from the beach hotels. In the blue light before dawn the pale sand turns pink and gold as the sun climbs over the horizon, and the wind draws fresh ripples across the slopes every morning. A lotus lake at the foot of the dunes adds green and pink to the scene in season.

Our jeep stops at the base of the dunes, and from there you can walk up the nearer slopes. Quad bikes and dune jeeps run to the highest ridges and viewpoints for an extra fee paid on site; most guests find a short quad ride worth it for the panorama. The best time to visit the White Sand Dunes is sunrise, before the heat and the crowds arrive.

Red Sand Dunes and sunset over Mui Ne

The Red Sand Dunes rise right beside the coast road near Mui Ne village. Their sand is a deep orange-red thanks to iron oxide, and their smooth, gentle slopes are easy to climb even for children. From the crest you see the bay full of fishing boats on one side and dry hills on the other.

On the sunset option this is the final stop, timed so you can settle on the sand and watch the sky change colour over the sea. On the sunrise option you visit them after the white dunes, when the morning light is soft and the sand is still cool underfoot. Local children sometimes rent plastic sleds for sliding; it is a fun extra, paid on the spot.

Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)

The Fairy Stream is one of the most unusual sights in Vietnam: a shallow, sandy-bottomed creek running through a small canyon of eroded sandstone in shades of red, orange, white and cream. The water rarely reaches above the ankle, so you walk upstream barefoot, with tall formations on one bank and palm and bamboo on the other.

Plan around 30 to 40 minutes here to walk a section of the stream and back. Is the Fairy Stream worth visiting? Yes, especially early or late in the day when the colours glow and the sand is not too hot. Leave your shoes with the driver or carry sandals, and keep your phone in a pocket or waterproof pouch for photos.

Mui Ne Fishing Village

Mui Ne began as a fishing settlement, and the harbour still shows that heritage every morning. The bay is crowded with brightly painted wooden boats and the famous round basket boats, called thung chai, that fishermen paddle between the larger vessels and the shore. On the beach, families sort the catch of fish, squid, crabs and shellfish and sell it directly to buyers.

From the viewpoint above the harbour you get the classic photo of boats scattered across the water; then you can step down onto the sand for a closer look at the market. The scene is busiest in the early morning, which is why the sunrise option catches it at its liveliest, but there is always something to see.

Coastal road and ocean viewpoint by jeep

Much of the pleasure of this tour is the ride itself. The open jeep follows the coastal road east of Phan Thiet, past palm-lined beaches, dragon fruit fields, small fish-sauce workshops and the long strip of resorts. On the way your driver pauses at a scenic ocean viewpoint where you can photograph the jeep with the sea behind it.

The jeep is shared with other guests on the default option and is driven by a local driver who speaks English, so you can ask about places along the route. If you would prefer the vehicle only for your own group, with flexible timing and longer photo stops, the private jeep option offers exactly that. Either way, this is the easiest Mui Ne sand dunes tour to fit into a beach holiday.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

The default option is a shared jeep with other guests. You can also choose a private jeep for your own party, at sunrise or in the morning.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

On the shared jeep the order of stops is fixed. With the private jeep you can spend longer at the places you like and add photo stops.

How many people fit in the jeep?

Jeeps usually carry up to four or five passengers. On the shared option you may share it with other travellers.

Is the price per person or per group?

The shared options are priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, from hotels in the Mui Ne beach town area. Phan Thiet city is outside the zone; guests there get a nearby meeting point.

What is included?

Hotel pickup and drop-off, a jeep with an English-speaking driver, entrance fees and drinking water.

How long is the tour?

About five hours from pickup to drop-off.

Should I choose sunrise or sunset?

Sunrise is cooler, quieter and catches the fishing village at its busiest. Sunset ends on the Red Sand Dunes with warm light and suits travellers who prefer not to wake early.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Children enjoy the dunes and the stream. The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, pregnant travellers or people with back or heart problems, as the jeep ride is bumpy and there is soft sand to walk on.

What should I bring?

Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable clothes, a light jacket for sunrise, sandals, a camera and some cash.

What is the best season for the Mui Ne dunes?

November to April is dry and clear, with strong winds from November to March. From May to October, short showers are possible, mainly in the afternoon.
