Full Description

The heart of Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay stretches along the eastern side of Cat Ba Island, a quieter extension of the same limestone seascape as Ha Long Bay. Deep emerald water surrounds rocky islands of every size and shape, some with tiny beaches at their feet, and the bay has far fewer boats than Ha Long. Since 2023 the Cat Ba archipelago has shared Ha Long Bay's UNESCO World Heritage listing.

This cruise heads into the core of the bay rather than skirting its edge, so you spend the afternoon deep among the karst towers. Is Lan Ha Bay worth visiting if you are already on Cat Ba? Absolutely: it is the island's great sight, and a luxury day boat lets you enjoy it in comfort, with shade, seating and space on deck for everyone.

Cai Beo floating fishing village

Leaving Ben Beo Harbour, the boat passes Cai Beo, a floating village set against the mountainside where families live in houses on rafts and raise fish in wooden cages between them. Archaeological finds show people have lived around Cai Beo for thousands of years, and the village remains a working community today.

From the deck you see small boats moving between the houses, nets drying in the sun and the colourful facades reflected in the still water. Your guide explains how the village feeds itself and how life changes with the seasons and the tides. It is a short, gentle start to the cruise and a great moment for photos before the open bay.

Viet Hai Village by electric car or bicycle

After lunch the boat docks at Viet Hai pier, and you continue by electric car or by bicycle along a quiet road through the forest to the ancient village of Viet Hai, deep inside Cat Ba National Park. The valley is ringed by steep green peaks, and the village keeps its traditional houses, gardens and rice fields.

You have free time to stroll between the old houses, chat with residents and, if you like, try a fish foot spa, a local favourite. The electric car is the easy choice for families and anyone who prefers not to cycle. Cat Ba National Park, created in 1986, protects the island's forests and is the only home of the rare golden-headed Cat Ba langur.

Swimming, kayaking and sunset on the bay

Back on board, the boat cruises out to open water where you can jump from the deck, swim in clear water, whizz down the boat's slide into the sea or paddle a kayak around the islands. Life jackets are available and the crew keeps an eye on swimmers. Swimming is best from May to October, when the water is warm.

As the boat turns back towards Ben Beo, guests gather on deck for the sunset with fresh fruit, biscuits and tea, watching the light turn gold and then pink over the karst. Soft drinks at the bar are extra. The best time to visit Lan Ha Bay overall is March to May and October to November, when days are mild and views are clear.

Ben Beo Harbour and getting to Cat Ba

Ben Beo is the small harbour just east of Cat Ba Town, a few minutes by car from most hotels. We pick you up at your hotel between 10:30 and 10:45, so there is no early alarm, and drop you back after the sunset gathering. The cruise lasts about seven hours in total.

How to get to Cat Ba Island: from Hanoi it is about three hours by road via Hai Phong and a short sea crossing, and from Ha Long there is a ferry from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan. If you would rather do this as a Lan Ha Bay day trip from Hanoi, another option includes pickup in Hanoi Old Quarter between 07:00 and 07:30 and the return the same evening.
