Overview
This Bai Tu Long Bay day cruise takes you away from the busiest Ha Long routes into the quieter north-eastern part of the same limestone seascape. We pick you up in Hanoi's Old Quarter in an air-conditioned vehicle, drive about two and a half hours by expressway to the international cruise port, and board a boutique Indochine-style boat that carries small groups only. Over roughly five and a half hours on the water you sail past sculpted islets, have a Vietnamese lunch on board, climb to Thien Canh Son Cave for a wide bay view and paddle a kayak between the rocks. It is a shared small-group cruise, ideal for couples, friends and families who want a calmer bay without staying overnight.

Full Description
Bai Tu Long Bay: the quieter side of the bay
Bai Tu Long Bay lies immediately north-east of Ha Long Bay and shares the same drowned karst landscape: steep limestone towers and islets rising straight from jade-green water, shaped over millions of years by sea and rain. Because far fewer boats sail here, the water is calmer, the views are less crowded and you often have whole channels to yourself. Many travellers ask whether a Bai Tu Long Bay day trip from Hanoi is worth it, and the answer for most is yes: it shows the classic scenery with a real sense of space.
On this cruise you spend the heart of the day on the water, moving slowly between islets so there is time to sit on deck, take photographs and simply watch the light change on the rock. The boutique boat is designed for small groups, so the deck never feels packed and the guide can talk with everyone about the bay, its fishing communities and its geology.
Ha Long Bay and its sculpted islets
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for its outstanding limestone seascape and later extended together with the Cat Ba archipelago. Its legend tells of a dragon descending to the sea to protect the coast, scattering jewels that became the islands, which is where the name, meaning descending dragon, comes from. On the route you pass named islets such as Mat Quy, Teapot, Dragon's Head and Toad, each earning its name from its silhouette.
The cruise links the southern edge of Bai Tu Long with the Ha Long side on the way back to port, so you see both areas in one day. The best time to visit Ha Long Bay is generally from March to May and from September to November, when skies are clearer; winter brings mist and cool air, while summer is hot with a higher chance of storms.
Thien Canh Son Cave on Hon Co Island
Thien Canh Son Cave sits high on Hon Co Island in the Cong Do area of Bai Tu Long Bay. Reaching it involves a climb of about a hundred steps up the hillside, and the reward is twofold: a cool chamber of stalactites and stalagmites inside, and from the entrance a panoramic view over the bay and its scattered islets that is one of the best photo spots of the day.
Your guide explains how the caves formed as the sea level rose and fell, and gives you time to explore at your own pace. Allow around thirty minutes for the climb, the cave and the viewpoint. Wear shoes with good grip, as the steps can be damp, and take your time; the effort is short and the view over the quiet water is well worth it.
Kayaking between the limestone islets
After the cave, you swap the boat for a kayak and paddle close to the base of the rock towers, where the water is usually calm and sheltered from the open sea. This is the moment most guests remember: gliding at water level, hearing only the paddles and the birds, and seeing the eroded notches that the tide has cut into the limestone over thousands of years.
Kayaking lasts around thirty to forty minutes and is suitable for beginners; life jackets are provided and the guide explains the route before you set off. Two-person kayaks make it easy for couples and parents with older children. If you prefer not to paddle, you can stay on board and enjoy the view from the deck while the others explore.
Getting from Hanoi to the cruise port
Many guests ask how to get to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi. The expressway has made the journey much easier: the drive from the Old Quarter to the Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay takes about two and a half hours each way, with a short rest stop. On this default option we pick you up from your hotel in the Old Quarter and bring you back in the evening, so there is no need to arrange buses or taxis yourself.
Because the transfer adds around five hours to the cruise, this is a full day, usually around twelve to thirteen hours from door to door. Use the drive to rest or watch the rice fields and villages of the Red River Delta pass by. If you are already staying in Ha Long, another option on this page lets you meet directly at the harbour instead.
