Full Description
Ha Long Bay and Fighting Cocks Islet
Ha Long Bay, in Quang Ninh Province on Vietnam's north-east coast, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where a maze of limestone islands rises straight out of jade-green water. Local legend tells of dragons sent down to protect the coast, spitting out jewels that became these islands, and the name itself means descending dragon. Geologists explain the same scenery as karst carved by rain and sea over millions of years.
The cruise passes Hon Ga Choi, better known as Fighting Cocks Islet: two rocks that face each other like roosters squaring up, the most photographed symbol of the bay. Your guide points out other shapes along the route while lunch is served. Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting on a day trip? If you only have one day, yes: this route covers a great cave, a kayak lagoon and a beach, and you sleep in Hanoi the same night.
Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave)
Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave, sits high on Bo Hon Island and is the largest cave in the central part of Ha Long Bay. A stairway climbs from the landing stage to the entrance, then a paved path winds through two great chambers. The first is modest; the second opens into a vast hall softly lit in colour, full of stalactites and stalagmites that guides compare to animals, soldiers and towers.
Allow 40 to 60 minutes including the steps up and down; the path is uneven in places and can be damp, so wear shoes with grip. Guests with limited mobility can relax on the boat instead. From the exit terrace you get one of the best high views over boats anchored between the islands. The visit follows the cruise timetable in daylight, so you never need to look up Sung Sot Cave opening hours yourself.
Luon Cave: kayaking and bamboo boats
Luon Cave is a low natural tunnel through the rock of Bo Hon Island that opens into a lagoon completely enclosed by cliffs. Calm water, hanging plants and the silence inside make it one of the most pleasant places to kayak in Ha Long Bay. Kayaks take two people; children may join only if they are over 10 years old and taller than 130 cm, together with a parent, and paddlers should weigh under 100 kg.
If you prefer not to paddle, a local rower takes you through the arch on a bamboo boat, or you can simply stay on board and enjoy the view. Wild monkeys are sometimes seen on the cliffs around the lagoon. A speedboat ride is sold on the spot as an optional extra and is not part of the cruise. Plan on about 35 minutes here, enough to pass into the lagoon, look around and return.
Ti Top Island: beach and viewpoint
Ti Top is a small island with a crescent of pale sand and a steep stairway to a pavilion on the summit. The climb takes most people 15 to 20 minutes; at the top the whole bay opens up below you, with cruise boats at anchor and island after island fading into the haze. It is the classic panoramic photo of Ha Long Bay and the highlight of the afternoon for many guests.
If climbing is not for you, the beach is good for a swim in the warmer months, roughly May to October. Boats are not allowed to anchor at Ti Top, so the cruise drops you off and returns at a set time; please follow your guide's timing. You have about 50 minutes on the island, then afternoon tea with fruit juice, cake and fresh fruit as the boat heads back towards the marina.
From Hanoi to Ha Long Bay by expressway
How to get to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi is the first question most travellers ask. Today the answer is the expressway: about two and a half hours each way in our air-conditioned limousine van with soft seats, with a short rest stop on the way. We collect you at your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter between 07:30 and 08:15; hotels on streets closed to buses meet at a nearby point a short walk away.
The cruise boards at Tuan Chau Marina, on a small island joined to Ha Long City by a road causeway. If you are already staying in Ha Long, other options let you join the same cruise directly at the marina. Expect to be back in Hanoi around 20:30 to 21:00, so dinner in the Old Quarter is easy afterwards; Hanoi has several halal restaurants, while on board vegetarian and gluten-free lunches are prepared on request.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a shared day cruise: you travel in a shared limousine van and join other guests on the luxury cruise boat with an English-speaking guide. All options on this page are shared; they differ in transfer type, lunch style and boat level.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The route is the same for all guests and follows the bay's authorised cruise route, but at each stop you choose: kayak or bamboo boat, swim or climb, or simply stay on board and relax.
How many people are on the boat and in the van?
The luxury cruise welcomes several small groups together and the limousine van has fewer, roomier seats than a standard bus. Kayaks take two people and bamboo boats around 10 to 12.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, in this option we pick you up and drop you off in Hanoi Old Quarter by limousine van. The options that start at Tuan Chau Marina have no transfer from Hanoi.
What is included?
Return limousine van transfer, buffet lunch, jacuzzi, afternoon tea with fruit juice, cake and fruit, the guided visit to Sung Sot Cave, kayaking or a bamboo boat at Luon Cave, time on Ti Top Island, an English-speaking guide and the Ha Long Bay entrance fee.
How long is the tour?
About 13 hours from pickup to drop-off, including roughly 5 hours of driving and around 6 hours on the water.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children are welcome; kayaking is for children over 10 and taller than 130 cm with a parent. Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top involve many steps, so guests with reduced mobility can stay on the boat for those stops.
What should I bring?
Passport or a copy, swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, shoes with grip and a reusable water bottle.
What is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?
March to May and October to November usually bring mild, clearer days. June to August is hot and best for swimming but storms can stop cruises; December to February is cool and misty, beautiful but less suited to swimming.
Can I get halal or vegetarian food on board?
The buffet is not halal-certified, but vegetarian and gluten-free lunches are prepared on request and seafood is always on offer. Tell us when booking and we pass it on to the boat.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option and date in the booking panel and send the request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes with your pickup details.
