Full Description

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park protects one of the oldest and largest limestone karst regions in Asia, formed over about four hundred million years. Its jungle-covered mountains hide hundreds of caves and underground rivers, and the park was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its geology and biodiversity. Rare primates, deer and hundreds of bird species live in its forests.

The drive from Phong Nha town into the park follows narrow valleys between steep green peaks, with the guide explaining how water carved the caves over millions of years. A Phong Nha Ke Bang day tour like this one combines the two most accessible show caves, so you see both a dry cave and a river cave in one day without having to arrange tickets, boats and transport yourself.

Paradise Cave

Paradise Cave stretches for about thirty-one kilometres and is one of the longest dry caves in Asia. A local man found its entrance in 2005, and British cavers then explored and mapped it; since 2010 the first kilometre has been open to visitors. An electric buggy carries you about 1.6 kilometres through the forest, and a stairway climbs the hillside to the entrance.

Inside, a long wooden walkway descends into enormous chambers lit softly from below, with white stalagmites, curtains of stone and crystal-like formations rising many metres high. The air stays cool all year, a welcome change on hot days. Plan around one and a half to two hours for the visit. Is Paradise Cave worth visiting? Many travellers call it the most beautiful cave they have ever seen.

The Son River by dragon boat

After lunch, you board a traditional dragon boat, a wooden river boat with a carved dragon head at the bow, at the pier in Phong Nha town. The boat follows the clear green Son River upstream for about thirty to forty minutes, past rice fields, water buffalo, fishermen and villages, with limestone mountains rising on both sides.

This is one of the most relaxing parts of the day, and the river views are lovely in the afternoon light. Life jackets are provided, and you can sit at the open sides for photos. The Son River boat trip is also the only way to reach the main chamber of Phong Nha Cave, which opens directly onto the river at the foot of the mountain.

Phong Nha Cave

Phong Nha Cave is a river cave about 7.7 kilometres long, with an underground river flowing out to join the Son River. At the entrance, the engine is switched off and the boatmen row you slowly into the darkness, where lights reveal stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations reflected in the still water. Ancient inscriptions in the old Cham script have been found inside the cave.

Deeper inside, the boat stops at a sandy bank and you walk along a path among the formations before returning by boat to daylight. The visit lasts around an hour, plus the river trip back to town. During the flood season, roughly October to November, high water can close the cave for a few days; in that case your guide suggests an alternative.

Phong Nha town and Dong Hoi

Phong Nha town, on the bank of the Son River at the edge of the national park, is a small, friendly base with guesthouses, cafés and the boat pier for the cave. Dong Hoi, about an hour away by road, is a coastal city with a railway station, an airport and the long sandy beach of Nhat Le, making it the main gateway for travellers arriving from Hanoi, Hue or Hoi An.

If you are wondering how to get to Phong Nha, most visitors arrive by train, bus or plane in Dong Hoi and continue by road. This tour picks you up at hotels in either place and brings you back in the evening, so there is no need to organise transport. Luggage can stay in the vehicle for guests who have already checked out.
