Full Description
Mui Ne: a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City to the coast
Mui Ne is a fishing cape and beach strip just east of Phan Thiet in Binh Thuan province, about 200 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Since the expressway opened, the drive takes roughly three to four hours each way, which makes a Mui Ne day trip from Ho Chi Minh City long but very doable. The region is one of the driest in Vietnam, so dunes and red cliffs meet a palm-lined shore in a way you see nowhere else in the south.
On this tour we leave early, stop once on the way for a break, and spend the middle of the day on the coast. Expect a long but relaxed day: the van is comfortable, the guide handles tickets and timing, and the evening return means you can still sleep in your own hotel. If you are wondering how to get to Mui Ne without renting a car or catching a bus, this is the simplest answer.
Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)
The Fairy Stream is a shallow, warm creek that winds for a few kilometres through a small canyon of eroded sandstone. On one side the banks glow red and orange; on the other, pale white and cream formations rise like miniature mountains. The water is usually only ankle-deep, and the soft sandy bed makes walking barefoot the natural way to explore it.
Your guide walks you upstream for around 30 to 45 minutes, pausing at the best viewpoints for photos before turning back. Shoes are left at the entrance or carried, so sandals or easy slip-on shoes help. Morning light makes the colours especially rich, which is why the stream comes first on our route. Families with young children enjoy it, as long as little ones are comfortable paddling in shallow water.
White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang)
The White Sand Dunes lie inland from the coast north-east of Mui Ne, a rolling sea of pale sand that shifts with the wind and looks more like a desert than tropical Vietnam. At their edge sits Bau Trang, a freshwater lake covered with lotus in season, which makes a striking contrast with the dunes behind it.
We spend about an hour here. The entrance is included, and you can walk onto the nearest slopes on foot. To reach the highest crests quickly, jeeps, quad bikes and sandboards are offered on site at extra cost; your guide can help you arrange them if you wish. Is the White Sand Dunes area worth visiting? For most travellers it is the visual highlight of the day, especially in the softer afternoon light.
Red Sand Dunes (Doi Cat Do)
Closer to the Mui Ne beach strip, the Red Sand Dunes are smaller than the white dunes but famous for their warm orange-red colour, caused by iron oxide in the sand. From the top you look over the coastline, the fishing boats in the bay and the hills inland, which makes this the classic place to watch the sun go down.
We time the visit for late afternoon so you can climb the gentle slopes, take photos and simply sit in the sand as the colours deepen. Plastic sleds are sometimes offered by local vendors for sliding down; these are optional and paid on the spot. Sunset is the best time to visit the Red Sand Dunes, and on this tour you are there for exactly that moment.
Beachside lunch and the Mui Ne coastline
Before the dunes we stop at a peaceful local beach for open sea views and a short stroll on the sand, then sit down to lunch at a beachside restaurant. Lunch is included and features local dishes, with seafood a speciality of this fishing coast. Please tell us about any dietary needs when booking; vegetarian dishes and seafood are easy to arrange, while halal-certified kitchens are limited outside Ho Chi Minh City.
The coastal road between Phan Thiet and Mui Ne passes colourful round basket boats, fish-sauce workshops and dragon fruit farms, so even the driving time between stops gives you a feel for life in Binh Thuan province. The best time to visit Mui Ne is the dry season from November to April, when skies are clear, although the wind is strong from November to March.
