Full Description

Ta Cu Mountain and the cable car

Ta Cu Mountain rises about 650 metres above the coastal plain in Ham Thuan Nam district, roughly 30 km south-west of Phan Thiet and around an hour by car from Mui Ne. Its slopes are covered in protected forest, granite boulders and walking trails used by pilgrims for well over a century. Today most visitors go up by cable car, a ride of about ten minutes that floats above the treetops with views stretching to the sea.

The cable car round trip is included on this tour, so there is no queue at the ticket desk for you to handle. If you are asking how to get to Ta Cu Mountain from Mui Ne without a long bus journey, a private car with your own guide is by far the most comfortable way, and the guide explains the mountain's history as you go.

Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda and the reclining Buddha

Near the summit stands Linh Son Truong Tho Pagoda, founded in the late 19th century around a cave where a monk once lived in retreat. The pagoda sits among old trees and rocks, with shaded courtyards, shrines and incense halls that feel very different from the busy coast below.

A short climb further brings you to the reclining Buddha, completed in the 1960s, about 49 metres long and 7 metres high, one of the largest of its kind in Vietnam. The white figure lies peacefully against the green mountainside, a calm and impressive sight. Plan around one and a half hours on the mountain. Long sleeves and long trousers are required at the pagoda, so dress modestly or bring a scarf and light trousers. Is Ta Cu Mountain worth visiting? For views, fresh air and a sense of Vietnamese Buddhist tradition, absolutely.

Po Shanu Cham Towers

On a hill between Phan Thiet and Mui Ne stand the Po Shanu Cham Towers, built of red brick by the Champa kingdom around the late 8th to 9th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Three towers remain, the largest still showing its tiered roof and arched doorways, and the site keeps a small exhibition on Cham culture.

The Cham people once ruled much of central and southern Vietnam, and their temples are some of the oldest buildings in the country. From the hilltop you also get a wide view over Phan Thiet and the sea. Your guide spends about 30 to 40 minutes here, explaining the symbols carved into the brick and how Cham communities in Binh Thuan still honour these temples today.

Phan Thiet harbour and the fishing fleet

Phan Thiet has lived from the sea for centuries and is famous across Vietnam for its fish sauce. Where the Ca Ty River meets the coast, the harbour is crowded with brightly painted blue, red and yellow fishing boats, many with eyes painted on the bow for good luck at sea.

This is a short photo stop of about 20 minutes, best in the morning when the boats return, and ideal for seeing local working life up close: boats unloading, nets drying and small traders on the quay. With a private guide you can ask about the fishing seasons, the boat designs and how the catch makes its way to the markets of Ho Chi Minh City.

Dragon fruit farm

Binh Thuan is Vietnam's biggest dragon fruit-growing region, and on the drive back you pass field after field of the climbing cactus plants trained on concrete posts. At night, many farms light the fields with rows of lamps to encourage the plants to flower out of season, a sight you may notice on early or late drives.

At the farm your guide shows how the fruit is grown, pollinated and harvested, and you usually have the chance to taste fresh dragon fruit and buy some to take away. It is a relaxed final stop of about 20 to 30 minutes before the private car takes you back to your hotel in Mui Ne, Ham Tien or Phan Thiet.
