Full Description
Ha Long Bay from Tuan Chau Marina
The cruise boards at Tuan Chau Marina, on a small island joined to Ha Long City by a causeway, and heads straight into Ha Long Bay. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a sea of limestone islands and pillars, carved over millions of years and covered in tropical forest. Its name means descending dragon, after a legend of dragons that dropped jewels to protect the coast and created the islands.
Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting if you have seen photos? Yes, because the scale only becomes real from the water, as islands overlap and open into new channels at every turn. On this route the boat does not stop at the busiest sights but keeps cruising south, so you enjoy the classic scenery from the deck and the restaurant windows before reaching calmer water.
Dark and Bright Cave by bamboo boat
Dark and Bright Cave, Hang Sang Toi in Vietnamese, is a water cave on the way from Ha Long Bay towards Lan Ha Bay. The boat anchors in a quiet cove and, after a short safety briefing, you step onto a bamboo boat rowed by a local fisherman. You glide first through a low, shadowy tunnel hung with stalactites, then out into the light of a hidden lagoon surrounded by sheer cliffs.
It is one of the gentlest cave visits in the area: no stairs, no walking, just a silent ride on jade-green water, with chances to see fish, crabs and sometimes monkeys on the rocks. The visit takes about 45 minutes, and the lagoon is especially beautiful in the soft light of early afternoon. It suits all ages, including guests who cannot manage steps.
Lan Ha Bay and the Ao Ech area
Lan Ha Bay lies off the eastern coast of Cat Ba Island and is part of the Cat Ba archipelago, added to the Ha Long Bay World Heritage Site in 2023. It is known for small sandy beaches, clear water and far fewer boats than its famous neighbour. The Ao Ech area, whose name means frog pond, is a sheltered stretch of water ringed by karst islands.
Here you take a kayak out among the cliffs or swim straight from the boat in calm, clear water; life jackets are provided. Swimming is most pleasant from May to October, while in cooler months many guests just paddle and take photos. For travellers short on time, this is the easiest way to enjoy a Lan Ha Bay day trip from Hanoi without an overnight stay.
Afternoon on board: jacuzzi, spring rolls and sunset
On the way back the boat becomes the attraction. The outdoor jacuzzi on deck faces the islands, afternoon tea is served, and the chef runs a spring-roll cooking demonstration where you learn to fold one of Vietnam's best-loved dishes. The air-conditioned restaurant with large windows keeps the views in front of you even on hot or rainy days.
Around 16:40 guests gather on the sundeck to watch the sun go down behind the limestone towers, the best light of the day for photos. The boat reaches Tuan Chau Marina around 17:15 to 17:30, then our driver takes you back to Hanoi. A soft drink is not included, but water is provided on the road.
