Full Description

Cat Ba National Park

Cat Ba National Park, founded in 1986, covers much of the interior of Cat Ba Island, the largest island in the archipelago south of Ha Long Bay. It protects tropical forest growing on limestone, mangroves, freshwater swamps and caves, and in 2004 the island and its waters were declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park is the only home of the golden-headed Cat Ba langur, one of the rarest primates on earth.

On a short hike you may see squirrels, butterflies and birds, and hear cicadas everywhere in summer; the langurs live in remote cliffs and are rarely seen. Is Cat Ba National Park worth visiting? If you enjoy nature, yes: it shows a completely different side of the island from the bay. The park is open daily from early morning until late afternoon, and the drive from Cat Ba Town takes about 20 minutes.

Ngu Lam Peak viewpoint

The trail to Ngu Lam Peak starts near the park headquarters and climbs steadily through dense forest, using stone steps, roots and some rocky sections. Most hikers reach the top in about 45 minutes, taking it slowly with water breaks. Your guide sets an easy pace, points out plants and insects and helps on the steeper parts.

At about 220 metres above sea level the summit has a viewing platform that rises above the tree tops. From here the green peaks of the park roll away in every direction, with valleys and, on clear days, glimpses of the sea. It is the best view inland on Cat Ba Island. The descent follows the same path and needs care, especially after rain, so good shoes with grip are essential.

Trung Trang Cave

Trung Trang Cave runs for about 400 metres through a limestone hill close to the park entrance. Local legend links its old name to a princess, and the cave is lit along a path that leads through chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years, some shaped like animals and curtains.

The walk through takes around 20 to 30 minutes; the floor is uneven and some passages are low, so watch your head. The cave stays cool all year, a welcome break on a hot day. Trung Trang Cave opening hours follow the park's daytime hours, and with this tour the ticket is already included, so you simply follow your guide inside.

A local pagoda and practical tips

The last stop is a local Buddhist pagoda, a quiet place where the guide explains how the building is arranged, which figures are honoured inside and how local people pray. You can light incense and make a wish if you like, or simply sit in the shade for a few minutes before the short drive back to your hotel.

Best time to visit Cat Ba National Park is March to May and October to November, when the trail is drier and the air cooler. In summer choose the morning start to avoid the midday heat, or the afternoon start for softer light at the top. Bring insect repellent, sunscreen and water, and wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the pagoda.
