Full Description
Cat Cat village
The day begins at Cat Cat, the Black Hmong village just below Sapa town. A paved path leads down past wooden houses, indigo dye pots and weaving looms to a river with a waterfall and an old hydro-power station from the French period. It is the easiest village to reach from town and a good introduction to Hmong life and crafts.
With a private guide you can stop wherever you like: inside a family house, at a loom, or by the waterfall for photos. Mornings are quieter, which is one reason we suggest an early start. Allow around an hour; the car waits at the top so you only walk down and back up the village path at your own pace.
Y Linh Ho, Lao Chai and Ta Van in the Muong Hoa Valley
Next the car follows the road into the Muong Hoa Valley, Sapa's most famous rice-terrace landscape. Your guide stops above Y Linh Ho, a Black Hmong village with spectacular terraces, then at Lao Chai, a larger Hmong village along the stream, and finally at Ta Van, home of the Giay people, where houses stand on stone foundations among flatter fields.
This private Sapa tour lets you see the villages without a long trek: you stroll short sections between the car stops, meeting families, watching farmers in the fields and taking in the views. Lunch is served in Ta Van, a relaxed break in the heart of the valley. The terraces are flooded in May and June, green in summer and golden from mid-September.
Sapa market
Back in town you visit the Sapa market, where Hmong, Dao and other local traders sell mountain vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, dried meats, brocade, silver jewellery and embroidered bags. It is a colourful place to see everyday life and pick up a handmade souvenir, and it is busiest in the morning and at weekends.
Your guide explains the local produce and medicinal herbs used by the mountain communities and helps you bargain politely if you want to buy. The visit lasts around 30 minutes, longer if you enjoy shopping. Next to the market you can also see the Stone Church on the town square before the car heads up into the mountains.
Silver Waterfall
About 12 km from town on the road to O Quy Ho Pass, Silver Waterfall, known locally as Thac Bac, plunges in white ribbons down a cliff of around 200 metres. It is at its fullest in the rainy months from June to September, when the roar can be heard from the road.
Steps lead up beside the falls to a small bridge where the spray cools the air, a climb of around 10 minutes. Is Silver Waterfall worth visiting? It is one of the easiest big waterfalls to reach in northern Vietnam, and with a private car you can stop as long as you like for photos. Small stalls by the road sell roasted corn and local snacks.
Love Waterfall and the Golden Stream
Love Waterfall lies inside Hoang Lien National Park near the top of the pass. A path of around 1.5 km leads through bamboo and broadleaf forest beside the Golden Stream to the foot of the falls, which drop about 100 metres into a clear pool. The walk takes around 20 to 30 minutes each way on a mostly easy trail.
The air here is cool even in summer, and the forest is one of the most peaceful corners of the Sapa area. Wear shoes with grip, as stones can be wet. Your guide sets the pace, and if anyone prefers to rest, the car waits at the entrance. Many guests find this quiet forest walk the most memorable part of the afternoon.
O Quy Ho Pass
O Quy Ho Pass winds for around 50 km between Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces, crossing the Hoang Lien Son range at Tram Ton Pass, close to 2,000 metres high. It is among the highest and most dramatic mountain roads in Vietnam, with hairpin bends, sheer drops and endless ridges.
On this tour you stop at the lonely tree viewpoint and other lookouts, best in the late afternoon when the light turns golden; the best time to visit O Quy Ho Pass is September to November or spring, when the views are clearest. A glass-floored skywalk on the pass can be added on the spot; its ticket is not included.
