Full Description
Fansipan summit, the Roof of Indochina
Fansipan rises to 3,143 metres in the Hoang Lien Son range just west of Sapa and is the highest mountain in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, which is why it is called the Roof of Indochina. Until the cable car opened in 2016, reaching the top meant a hard two or three day climb; today you can stand at the summit marker within the morning.
Around the top you will find a spiritual complex of pagodas, a bell tower and a giant bronze Buddha statue looking over the clouds. On clear days the views stretch across endless ridges; on others you stand above a sea of cloud. Is Fansipan worth visiting? For most travellers it is the highlight of Sapa, but bring a warm jacket: it is often around ten degrees colder than town.
Muong Hoa monorail, Fansipan cable car and funicular
The journey up is a highlight in itself. From the station in Sapa town the Muong Hoa monorail runs down into the valley to the lower cable car station. The Fansipan cable car then carries you more than 6 km across the Muong Hoa Valley and up the mountain in around 15 to 20 minutes, passing over rice terraces, forest and rock faces.
From the top station a funicular climbs closer to the summit, leaving a short flight of steps to the peak marker. How to get to Fansipan from Sapa is therefore simple, and on this tour all three tickets are included and your guide handles the queues and timing. The system can pause in severe weather or for maintenance, in which case we adjust the day with you.
Cat Cat village
Back in town, the afternoon begins at Cat Cat, a Black Hmong village tucked into a steep valley just below Sapa. Stone paths lead past wooden houses, looms and indigo dye pots, small terraced fields and craft stalls, down to a river where a waterfall pours over the rocks.
Your local ethnic guide explains how Hmong families live, farm and make their clothing, from hemp weaving to batik and embroidery, and you can look inside a traditional house. The Cat Cat village entrance ticket is included. Allow around an hour; the paths have steps, but the walking is short and the guide keeps an easy pace after the morning on the mountain.
Moana viewpoint
The final stop is Moana, a photo-friendly hillside viewpoint with a giant golden hand, a Bali-style gate, an infinity pool reflecting the sky and a large statue of a girl looking out over the valley. Behind it all rise the Hoang Lien Son mountains, the same range you crossed by cable car in the morning.
It is a relaxed end to the day, with time to take pictures and enjoy the mountain air. If you would like an extra thrill, the guide can drop you at the alpine coaster pick-up point instead of your hotel; the coaster ticket is not included and is bought on site. Otherwise the tour returns to the centre of Sapa around 15:00.
Best time to visit Fansipan and tour tips
The best time to visit Fansipan is from September to November and March to May, when skies are clearest. Summer brings more cloud and rain, and from December to February the summit can drop below freezing, sometimes with frost or even snow, which many visitors find magical. Start early: the 08:00 departure helps you reach the top before the busiest hours.
This tour is designed for travellers who want Sapa's highlights with minimal walking. If you prefer a shorter day, the half-day Cat Cat and Moana options skip Fansipan; the private options add hotel pickup by private car and a guide just for your party. Whichever you choose, book a day or two ahead in peak months.
