Full Description
Sapa town and the stone church
Sapa sits at about 1,500 metres in the Hoang Lien Son mountains, close to the Chinese border, and was developed by the French in the early 20th century as a cool hill station. Today it is the main base for trekking in northern Vietnam, with markets where Hmong and Red Dao women sell embroidered textiles and views over the valley towards Fansipan, the highest mountain in Indochina.
The trek starts from your hotel or from the stone church in the centre of town, a grey granite church built by the French that is the landmark of Sapa. Many travellers ask how to get to Sapa: most arrive from Hanoi by bus or overnight train to Lao Cai, then continue by road, about five to six hours in total. Arrive the day before to rest and leave your large luggage at your hotel.
The Muong Hoa Valley rice terraces
Below Sapa, the Muong Hoa Valley follows a river through a landscape of rice terraces carved into the hillsides over generations by the Hmong, Dao and Giay communities. The terraces follow the contour of the slopes like giant staircases, fed by bamboo channels that carry water from the mountain streams. The valley is also known for ancient carved boulders whose patterns are still studied today.
The best time to visit Sapa for the terraces depends on what you want to see: in May and June the fields are flooded and mirror the sky, in July and August they are bright green, and from mid-September to early October they turn gold before the harvest. A Muong Hoa Valley trek is the classic way to experience this scenery, walking on narrow paths between the fields with your guide.
Hmong villages and daily life
The Black Hmong are the largest community around Sapa, recognisable by their indigo-dyed clothing, which women make from hemp, dye in large vats and decorate with batik patterns drawn in wax. Walking through the villages, you see women weaving and embroidering in front of their houses, children playing on the paths, buffalo resting in the fields and families drying corn and rice in the sun.
Typical routes from Sapa pass through villages such as Lao Chai before reaching Ta Van, with village entry fees already included. Your guide, who grew up in the valley, explains local customs, farming, festivals and the different minority groups. Along the way, local women may walk alongside offering handicrafts; buying is entirely your choice, and a polite smile is always enough.
A night with a family in Ta Van village
Ta Van is a large village on the valley floor where Giay and Hmong families live side by side, surrounded by terraces and bamboo groves. Your night is spent in the house of a local family, with simple, clean sleeping arrangements and basic facilities. This village stay is the heart of the experience, giving you time to see the valley in the quiet of the evening.
Dinner is cooked by the family with vegetables from their garden, rice from the terraces and local dishes, and shared around the table with your group and your guide. Mornings in Ta Van are beautiful, with mist rising from the river and roosters calling across the fields. Bring a torch and warm layers, as nights in the mountains are cool for much of the year.
Bamboo forest and the second day's trek
After breakfast with the family, the second day continues through the valley, along bamboo forest paths, small streams and more terraced hillsides, with lunch along the way. The bamboo groves are cool and shaded, and the sound of the wind in the tall stems is a welcome change from the open fields. The pace is relaxed, with stops for photos and rest.
At the end of the trek, transport takes you back up to Sapa town, usually in the afternoon. Is a Sapa trekking tour worth it? For many travellers, two days in the valley with a local guide, a family dinner and a quiet night in a village is the highlight of their trip to Vietnam, far richer than a short day walk.
