Full Description

The take-off point above Sapa

The flight starts from a grassy launch slope at about 1,750 metres, one of the highest paragliding take-off points in Vietnam, a short drive from Sapa town. From here the land falls away towards the Muong Hoa Valley, and on a clear day you can see the terraced slopes, scattered villages and the ridges of the Hoang Lien Son range leading towards Fansipan.

Getting there is part of the experience: our driver collects you from your hotel about 30 minutes before your slot and climbs the mountain road to the launch area. While the pilots read the wind, you have time to take in the view, take photos and watch other flights lift off. A high take-off means more height to play with and a longer, smoother glide down.

Flying over the Muong Hoa Valley

Once airborne, your pilot steers you out over the Muong Hoa Valley, the heart of Sapa's rice terraces. Below you the curving terraces of the Black Hmong and Giay villages form patterns that you simply cannot appreciate from the ground, while the Muong Hoa stream glints along the valley floor.

The flight lasts around 10 to 15 minutes depending on the air, quiet apart from the wind. If you feel relaxed, ask the pilot for a few gentle turns; if you prefer a calm glide, say so and they will keep it smooth. Paragliding in Sapa is very different by season: green and lush from June to August, golden in late September and early October, and clear blue in autumn.

Safety, pilots and who can fly

All flights are tandem, meaning you are clipped into the same wing as an experienced certified pilot who controls the take-off, flight and landing. Before you fly, the team gives a full safety briefing, fits your harness and helmet and checks every connection, and sport insurance is included.

Is Sapa paragliding safe? Flights only go ahead when wind, cloud and rain are within safe limits, and the team will reschedule or cancel if conditions are not right. Passengers must weigh between 30 and 100 kg. The flight is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or anyone with a strong fear of heights. Wear sports shoes and comfortable clothes, and bring your passport or a copy.

Landing, video and best time to fly

You land softly in a field in the valley, usually walking or sliding in on your feet as the pilot brings the wing down. Your action-camera video is handed over, together with a tandem flight certificate and a small souvenir, before the car takes you back to your hotel; the whole outing lasts about 2.5 hours.

The best time for paragliding in Sapa is September to November and March to May, when skies are clearest and winds steady. Morning slots tend to be calmer and are good for first-timers; slots run from 07:00 to 16:00. In winter fog and low cloud often stop flights, so keep a spare day in your Sapa plans.
