Full Description

Craft Village and Coffee Plantation

The day starts in the farming country around Dalat, where families have kept traditional crafts alive. In the craft village you see how silkworms are raised and how their cocoons are boiled, reeled and woven on clattering looms into soft silk, then visit a farm growing mushrooms in cool, dark sheds. Your guide explains each step and translates when the artisans share their stories.

Next comes a coffee plantation on a scenic hillside. The Central Highlands grow most of Vietnam's coffee, and the Lam Ha area is covered with arabica and robusta bushes that flower white in early spring. Here you learn how the beans are picked, dried and roasted, including the unusual weasel coffee for which the region is known, and you can enjoy a cup of Vietnamese coffee while looking out across the valley. Plan around 45 minutes at each stop.

Elephant Falls (Thac Voi)

Elephant Falls lies near the town of Nam Ban, about 30 km south-west of Dalat, and is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the region. It takes its name from the huge boulders at its base, which locals say look like a herd of elephants, and from a K'Ho legend about elephants that turned to stone. Water plunges about 30 m over a wide rock face into a pool full of spray and rainbows.

Is Elephant Falls worth visiting? Absolutely, but be ready for steep, uneven stone steps on the way down. Brave visitors can walk along the rocks to small caves behind the curtain of water, while others enjoy the view from the upper terraces. Many travellers ask how to get to Elephant Waterfall from Dalat: public transport is limited, which is why a private car with a guide makes this trip so easy. Allow about an hour.

Linh An Pagoda

Right beside Elephant Falls stands Linh An Pagoda, a peaceful Buddhist temple built in the 1990s on the hillside above the river. Its grounds are dominated by a towering white statue of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, known in Vietnam as Quan Am, which can be seen from far across the valley, and by a huge smiling Happy Buddha with a round belly that children love.

The pagoda is an active place of worship, so visitors dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered and speak quietly in the prayer halls. From the terraces there are lovely views over the coffee gardens and the falls below, and the statue's base is a favourite spot for photos. Inside, you can see colourful altars and ceramic decorations. A visit of around 30 minutes fits naturally after the falls, and your guide explains the meaning of the statues and the customs of the temple.

Pongour Falls

Pongour Falls, in Duc Trong district about 45 km south of Dalat, is often described as the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam's highlands. Instead of one single drop, the water spreads across broad terraces of dark rock more than 100 m wide, creating a curtain of white cascades that looks especially impressive in the rainy season. The surrounding grassland and forest make it a perfect place for a slow walk and a picnic-style break.

A Pongour Falls day trip from Dalat is hard to arrange without a car, so it fits perfectly into a private countryside tour. The best time to visit Pongour is from June to November, when the river runs full; in the dry months the flow is gentler but the rock terraces are easier to explore. A traditional festival is held here each year in the first lunar month. Plan around an hour at the falls.

Paradise Lake, the Chicken Village and the Elephant Farm

In the afternoon you continue to the calm waters of Paradise Lake, framed by pine-covered hills, a pleasant spot to stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air. Then comes the Chicken Village, home of the K'Ho people, known for the giant rooster statue standing at its centre. The statue recalls a local legend of a young woman's love, and your guide explains the matriarchal traditions of the K'Ho, where families pass down through the mother's line and the husband joins the wife's household.

The last stop is an elephant farm in the countryside, where you can see elephants up close and learn about their place in the life of the highland peoples. The farm also produces an unusual local coffee that your guide will describe. Along the way, the winding mountain roads pass rice fields, flower farms and villages that few visitors ever see, and you can ask the driver to stop for photos at any time.
