Nha Trang Bay: islands and clear water

Nha Trang Bay curves along the coast of Khanh Hoa province, sheltered by a scatter of green, mountainous islands. The largest is Hon Tre, whose ridge rises behind the city skyline, while smaller islands such as Hon Mun, Hon Mot and Hon Tam lie further out with coves of clear turquoise water. The bay is a member of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, and its calm, warm water makes it one of Vietnam's best places for easy snorkelling.

This snorkelling day trip from Nha Trang city shows the bay at its best in the morning, when the light is soft and the sea is usually calm. The boat leaves from the port south of the centre and cruises past fishing boats and the long cable car line to Hon Tre before reaching the first swim stop.

Snorkelling stops and coral reefs

The crew chooses the snorkelling spots on the day according to wind and visibility, usually sheltered coves around the southern islands. Much of this area belongs to or borders the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area, established in 2001 as Vietnam's first marine protected area, which is known for its rich hard corals and reef fish.

With your mask and snorkel you can float over coral heads and see parrotfish, damselfish, butterflyfish, sea urchins and, with luck, a clownfish in its anemone. The guide gives a short introduction for first-timers, life jackets are available for non-swimmers, and you can spend as long as you like in the water at each stop. Please do not touch or stand on the coral, so that it stays healthy for everyone.

Paddleboards, kayaks and the giant water slide

Between swims, the boat becomes a floating playground. Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are included, so you can paddle around the cove at your own rhythm, and the giant water slide on the boat sends you splashing straight into the sea, a favourite with children and teenagers. For those who prefer to relax, the deck has shade and space to sunbathe.

Optional extras such as parasailing, sea-walking, banana boat rides and water scooters can be booked on site at an extra cost, if you want more adrenaline. The trip already includes the basic activities, so there is nothing else you need to pay for to enjoy a full morning on the water.

Barbecue lunch on board

After the swim stops, the crew fires up the grill and serves a barbecue lunch on board as the boat cruises gently across the bay to relaxing music. Expect grilled seafood and meats, rice or noodles, fresh vegetables and tropical fruit, with mineral water included and soft drinks available.

Nha Trang has a few Indian and halal-friendly restaurants in the city, but halal-certified food on boat trips is limited. Seafood and vegetarian dishes are easy to arrange: tell us when you book if you need vegetarian or no-pork food and we will pass your request on to the crew. Before departure, the welcome at the seaside lounge with homemade pastries, tea and soft drinks is a pleasant way to start the day.

How to get to the Nha Trang Bay islands: boat trips leave from the port on the southern edge of the city, about 15 to 20 minutes by road from the beach hotels, and our trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Nha Trang city centre. Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is about 35 to 45 minutes from the city; if you stay in the Cam Ranh resort area, ask us about a transfer, as an extra charge applies.

The best time to visit Nha Trang Bay for snorkelling is from February to August, when the sea is calm and the water clear. The rainy season runs from September to December, bringing heavier seas and occasional storms; trips can then be changed or cancelled for safety, and we will contact you if that happens.
