Full Description

Linh Ung Pagoda and the Lady Buddha on Son Tra

The Son Tra Peninsula, nicknamed Monkey Mountain, rises north-east of Da Nang as a green, forested headland and protected nature reserve that shelters rare red-shanked douc langurs. On its southern slope, facing the city and the bay, stands Linh Ung Pagoda, completed in 2010, with ornate gates, bonsai gardens and a hall of carved arhat statues.

Its most famous sight is the Lady Buddha, a white statue of the Bodhisattva of Compassion about 67 metres tall, standing on a lotus base and looking out over the sea, believed by local fishermen to protect them. We spend around an hour here, with time for the views across Da Nang to the Marble Mountains. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, as this is an active place of worship.

Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son)

About 9 km south of the city centre, the Marble Mountains are a cluster of limestone and marble outcrops named after the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The largest, Thuy Son (Water Mountain), is the one visitors explore, with pagodas, grottoes and shrines hidden in its cliffs and stone steps linking them. Huyen Khong Cave, lit by shafts of daylight from openings in the roof, is the most atmospheric chamber.

Plan about an hour inside. An elevator takes you part of the way up, and from the Vong Giang viewpoint you look over the river, the coast and Non Nuoc stone-carving village at the foot of the hills. Is the Marble Mountains area worth visiting? It combines nature, religion and views in a compact space just 20 minutes from Da Nang, which makes it one of the best half-day trips in central Vietnam.

Am Phu Cave

Am Phu Cave lies at the foot of Thuy Son and takes its name from the Buddhist realm of the dead. You cross a small bridge over a dark pool, the river separating life and the afterlife, and descend into a vast, dimly lit cavern filled with sculptures showing the judgement of souls and the punishments of the underworld. It is dramatic and a little eerie, a powerful lesson in traditional beliefs.

From the depths, steep steps and a narrow passage climb towards a brighter chamber representing heaven, with views out of the mountain at the top. Allow about 30 minutes. The paths are uneven and some sections are tight and slippery, so this part is not recommended for travellers with claustrophobia, vertigo or back problems; your guide can suggest a shorter route if needed.

My Khe Beach and the coastal drive

Between Son Tra and the Marble Mountains the route follows the long sweep of My Khe Beach, Da Nang's favourite city beach, with fine pale sand, palm trees and calm water in the dry season. You see it from the vehicle window as your guide tells you about how Da Nang has grown from a port town into one of Vietnam's most liveable cities.

The beach is ideal for a swim later in the day, and our tour returns you to your hotel by early afternoon, leaving plenty of time to enjoy it. If you are planning your stay, the best time to visit Da Nang for beach weather is February to August; from September to December heavy rains and occasional storms are common.

Light local lunch in Da Nang

The default option ends with a light lunch of a Da Nang classic: either mi Quang, broad turmeric rice noodles in a little rich broth with herbs and peanuts, or banh xeo, crispy rice-flour pancakes wrapped in rice paper with fresh greens. It is a simple, authentic taste of central Vietnamese cooking rather than a full restaurant meal.

Traditional versions of both dishes may contain pork or shrimp, so please tell us when booking if you avoid pork or need a vegetarian dish; we pass the request on. Halal-certified restaurants are limited in Da Nang, and we are happy to recommend options for your other meals. If you prefer to eat on your own, choose the option without a meal in the booking panel.
