Full Description

Tuyen Lam Lake: Dalat's Largest Lake

Tuyen Lam Lake was created in 1987 by damming the Tia stream, and its reservoir now covers around 350 hectares of winding arms and coves. Pine-covered hills rise straight from the water on every side, and small islets dot the surface, so the lake feels wild and peaceful even though it lies only about 6 km south of central Dalat. At about 1,400 m above sea level, the air is fresh and the water usually calm, ideal for paddling.

How to get to Tuyen Lam Lake: the lakeside starting point is around 20 minutes by road from the city centre, and the exact location is sent after booking. Transfers are not included in this session, but we can arrange a private car to and from your hotel so you arrive relaxed and on time. Allow a little extra time on weekends, when the lakeside roads are busier.

Kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard: Your Choice

Before setting off, your guide fits your life jacket and gives a short lesson: how to hold the paddle, steer and keep your balance. Kayaks are stable two-seat boats, perfect for couples, friends or a parent with an older child. A stand-up paddleboard (SUP) is a little more challenging and great for anyone who enjoys a gentle workout; many beginners kneel first, then stand once they feel steady.

The route follows the shoreline of the lake's peninsula, past pine forest, quiet coves and seasonal viewpoints such as hillside gardens and lavender fields, depending on the time of year. Your guide stays with the group the whole time, chooses sheltered water if the wind picks up and keeps the pace easy. Entrance fees for attractions on the shore are not included, as this is a paddle on the water.

Coffee Break on a Quiet Islet

Halfway through the paddle you pull up on a small, tranquil islet for a break. Your guide prepares a freshly made cup of local coffee, a fitting treat in Lam Dong province, whose highland farms around Dalat grow much of Vietnam's arabica coffee. Sitting on the shore with a warm cup, the pine trees reflected in still water, is for many guests the most memorable moment of the session.

The break also gives you time to stretch, take photos and swap places between kayak and board if you want to try both. Bottled water is provided throughout. If you prefer tea or have dietary preferences, let us know when booking and we will pass on your request. Your guide takes pictures of you on the water during the paddle, so you can keep your phone safely stored.

Sunset or Sunrise: The Best Time to Paddle

The sunset paddle runs from about 2:30 to 5:30 PM, when the low sun lights the pine forests in warm colours and the lake turns gold and pink. It is the most popular choice and ideal if you prefer not to wake early. The sunrise session starts at 5 AM, when mist often lies on the water and the lake is completely still; it must be booked by 8 PM the evening before. A morning session from about 8:30 AM offers crisp air and bright reflections.

The best time to visit Tuyen Lam Lake is the dry season, roughly December to April, with clear skies and the best sunsets. During the rainy season, from about May to November, afternoon showers are frequent, so the morning sessions are often calmer. In storms or strong wind the guide may shorten the route or reschedule for safety.

Around the Lake: Truc Lam Zen Monastery and Pine Hills

Overlooking the lake from Phung Hoang Hill stands Truc Lam Zen Monastery, built in the early 1990s and now Dalat's best-known Zen monastery, with peaceful gardens, flower beds and views over the water. It is reached by road or by a scenic cable car of about 2.3 km from Robin Hill, which glides over the pine forest. Both make a lovely addition before an afternoon paddle.

Is Tuyen Lam Lake worth visiting? For travellers who want a calm, natural side of Dalat away from the busy centre, absolutely: the lake combines water, forest and highland air in one easy outing. Our team can help you plan the rest of your day, including a private transfer that stops at the monastery before you meet your guide at the lakeside.
