Full Description
Vinh Moc Tunnels
The Vinh Moc Tunnels are the highlight of a DMZ tour from Hue. In the late 1960s, villagers of Vinh Linh dug a network of tunnels into the red earth near the coast to escape heavy bombing, and families lived, cooked and even gave birth underground for several years. The passages run on several levels, with family rooms, wells, meeting halls and exits that open towards the sea.
A guide leads you through the lit sections, so the visit is comfortable but narrow in places, and you should expect to stoop. Most guests find it more moving than any monument. Allow about an hour, and consider the tunnel visit the answer to anyone asking whether the DMZ tour is worth doing.
Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River
Hien Luong Bridge crosses the Ben Hai River at the 17th parallel, the line chosen in 1954 to divide the country into North and South. For two decades the river was the border of the demilitarised zone, and the bridge was painted half in one colour and half in another. Today it is a quiet crossing with a memorial, a small museum and flagpoles on each bank.
Standing here makes sense of the whole day, since every site on the DMZ route relates to this line. Our guide explains how the zone was drawn and how the two halves of the country reconnected. This is also a good photo stop and a short break before the afternoon visits.
Khe Sanh Combat Base and Ta Con Airfield
Khe Sanh lies in the highlands near the Lao border and was the site of a major siege in 1968. The Khe Sanh Combat Base museum, on the old Ta Con airfield, has bunkers, trenches, photographs and military vehicles and aircraft left in the open. The grounds are quiet today, surrounded by green hills and coffee plantations.
The area around Khe Sanh is also known for Arabica coffee, and many travellers search for a Khe Sanh tour from Hue to combine history with a cup in the highlands, which is possible at your own expense. Plan on about an hour at the museum, where a guide adds context to what you see.
Dakrong Bridge and Highway 9
Highway 9 climbs from the coast into the Truong Son mountains, and Dakrong Bridge, over the river in the valley, marks the gateway to this route. During the war the area was the entrance of a branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and the bridge was rebuilt several times. The present suspension bridge is a simple modern crossing in a green valley.
On the way you pass villages of the Pako and Van Kieu minorities, so the drive itself shows a different side of Quang Tri. The drive from Hue to Khe Sanh takes a couple of hours, and our guide shares stories and context as you travel. Earlier in the day you also stop at Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, a site rebuilt after hard fighting.
Quang Tri Ancient Citadel
Quang Tri Citadel is a modest brick fortress in the town of Quang Tri, but it became a symbol of the 1972 fighting when its walls were pounded during weeks of battle. Today you see the restored gate, a memorial and a small museum, and the quiet grounds make it a place to reflect.
The citadel requires modest clothing, so shorts are not allowed, though a cover can usually be hired at the entrance. Our guide tells the story of the battle and explains why the site still matters to local people. It is a short stop of around thirty minutes, and it fills out the overall picture of the DMZ day.
