Full Description
The road from Hue into Quang Tri Province
Vinh Moc lies about 100 km north of Hue, roughly two hours by car on the coastal highway. The drive crosses the rice plains of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri, passes small towns, temples, cemeteries and sand dunes near the sea, and gives your guide time to explain how central Vietnam became the front line of a divided country between 1954 and 1975.
Many visitors ask how to get to Vinh Moc Tunnels from Hue. Public buses do not reach the site easily and taxis rarely wait, so a private car is the simplest way to make a Vinh Moc Tunnels day trip from Hue in half a day. Because the car is yours, you can ask for a comfort stop or a photo stop whenever you like, and choose a later start if you prefer a slower morning.
Hien Luong Bridge
Hien Luong Bridge became one of the most powerful symbols of a divided Vietnam. After the 1954 Geneva Accords, the line between North and South ran along the river right under this bridge. Each side painted its half in its own colour, raised flags on tall towers and broadcast messages by loudspeaker across the water. The bridge was destroyed during the war and rebuilt later in its historic form.
Today you can walk across the restored blue and yellow bridge, see the flag tower on the north bank and visit the small museum about life on the border. On the south bank stands a large reunification monument of a mother and child waiting. With your private guide, spend about 30 to 40 minutes here; the riverside setting is peaceful and good for photos, especially in the morning light.
The Ben Hai River and the 17th parallel
The Ben Hai River flows from the Truong Son mountains to the sea, and for two decades its course along the 17th parallel marked the centre of the Demilitarised Zone, with a buffer of about 5 km on each bank. Villages on both sides were cleared or fortified, and the area became one of the most heavily bombed landscapes in the world.
Seeing the calm, green river today, with fishing boats and rice fields, helps visitors understand how much the region has changed. Your guide explains how families were separated, what life was like on each side, and why the area is now a protected national relic. Best time to visit Hue and the DMZ is February to April; September to December brings heavy rain in central Vietnam, and May to August is hot but dry.
Vinh Moc Tunnels: the underground village
Vinh Moc village sat just north of the dividing line, and when bombing made life above ground impossible, villagers dug a tunnel system by hand between 1965 and 1967. It runs for almost two kilometres on three levels, roughly 12 to 23 metres deep, with entrances opening onto the beach and the hillside. Families lived here for years, sharing tiny alcoves, wells, a meeting room and a maternity room where babies were born.
Vinh Moc Tunnels opening hours are roughly 07:00 to 17:00 daily, and the entrance ticket is bought on site. Allow about an hour inside the lit main passages and at the museum, which displays photographs, tools and wartime objects. Ceilings are low and some corridors are narrow, so wear comfortable shoes and be ready to bend; the tunnels stay cooler than outside but can feel humid.
Is Vinh Moc worth visiting?
For most travellers the answer is yes: the tunnels are better preserved and more authentic than many tunnel sites elsewhere in Vietnam, because they were built to live in rather than to fight from. Walking out of a tunnel exit onto the cliff and seeing the sea where supply boats once landed is a moment most visitors remember.
This private DMZ tour gives you the time to absorb the story without rushing. If you are continuing your journey, the same route can end in Phong Nha for the caves, or turn south after the tunnels and continue past Lang Co Beach and over the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An; these one-way options are listed separately in the booking panel. Otherwise our driver brings you back to your hotel in Hue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is private. Every option on this page uses a car or van only for your party; the default option also includes your own local guide.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. You can spend longer at the tunnels or the bridge, add photo stops, and choose your start time. Tell us in advance if you want to add another DMZ site, so we can check the timing.
How many people fit in the vehicle?
We use a car or a van depending on your group size, so tell us how many people are travelling when you book.
Is the price per person or per group?
The options are priced per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel or homestay in Hue are included. The one-way options end in Phong Nha or Hoi An instead.
What is included?
A private air-conditioned car or van, an English-speaking driver, a local guide, bottled water, road tolls, parking and fuel. Entrance tickets, meals, soft drinks and tips are not included.
How long is the tour?
About 5.5 hours from pickup to drop-off in Hue. The one-way options to Phong Nha or Hoi An take about 6 to 6.5 hours.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children usually love the tunnels and are welcome with their parents. The tour is not recommended for people with reduced mobility or claustrophobia because of the narrow, low passages and steps.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water, a light rain jacket in the wet season and cash in Vietnamese dong for entrance tickets.
What is the best time of day and season?
A morning start gives cooler weather and softer light at the bridge. February to April is the most pleasant season; September to December is rainy and storms can occasionally affect the road.
Can we end the tour in Hoi An or Phong Nha?
Yes. Choose one of the one-way options in the booking panel: one ends at your hotel in Phong Nha or elsewhere in Quang Binh Province, the other drives south via Lang Co Beach and the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An. These options have a driver without a guide.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option, date and start time in the booking panel. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes.
