Full Description
The Saigon River by night
The Saigon River rises near the Cambodian border and winds through Ho Chi Minh City on its way to the sea, wrapping around the old centre in a series of wide bends. For most of the city's history it was the main trading artery, and ocean-going ships still sail up to the port. In the evening the water turns calm and dark, and the reflections of thousands of lights make a Saigon River night cruise one of the most memorable things to do in Ho Chi Minh City at night.
Dinner boats leave from piers on the District 1 riverfront and cruise slowly downstream and back for about two hours, so the ride is smooth and there is no feeling of open sea. On deck the breeze is noticeably cooler than in the streets, which makes the river the most pleasant place in the city after sunset.
Ho Chi Minh City skyline and riverbanks
From the boat you see the city in a way that is impossible from street level. On one bank rise the towers of District 1, with the city's tallest skyscrapers lit in changing colours; on the other, the fast-growing Thu Thiem district spreads along a landscaped promenade. The cable-stayed Ba Son Bridge, opened in 2022, glows above the river, and further along you pass the Saigon Bridge and quiet stretches lined with palms and riverside homes.
Near the start you also pass Nha Rong Wharf, a French-era port building from the 1860s with dragon figures on its roof, now a museum. Your crew points out the landmarks as you sail. The best photographs come from the open deck in the first half hour, when the lights are fresh against the evening sky, so keep your phone or camera close.
Dinner on board at your private table
The heart of this dinner cruise is your own table, reserved for your party only, so you can talk, celebrate or simply enjoy the view without sharing with strangers. Dinner is served as a set menu or a buffet depending on the boat of the evening, with Vietnamese favourites such as fresh spring rolls, grilled seafood, stir-fried vegetables and fragrant rice, alongside international dishes for less adventurous eaters.
You are welcomed with a soft drink on boarding; further soft drinks can be ordered on board. Live music or a traditional cultural performance accompanies the meal on most evenings. Let us know in advance about vegetarian or no-pork needs and we will pass them to the kitchen; we cannot promise halal certification on board, but Ho Chi Minh City has halal restaurants in District 1 that we are happy to recommend for other evenings.
Private car transfer and the pier
Getting to the boat is easy: a private car picks you up from your hotel in central Ho Chi Minh City at the time you choose in the early evening and drives you straight to the riverside pier. There is no waiting for other guests and no need to find the pier yourself in the evening traffic. On arrival our team helps with check-in and shows you to your table.
When the boat returns, the same arrangement takes you back to your hotel, so the whole evening lasts about three hours including transfers. This makes the private-table dinner cruise ideal for the first or last night of a trip, for anniversaries and birthdays, and for families who want a relaxed evening out without organising anything themselves.
