Full Description
My Son Sanctuary: a Cham holy site in the hills
Hidden in a valley about 40 km west of Hoi An, My Son Sanctuary was the spiritual centre of the Champa kingdom for nearly a thousand years. Successive Cham rulers built and rebuilt brick temples here to honour Shiva, protector of the dynasty, and to house the royal linga. The first sanctuaries were of wood; after a fire, they were replaced by the brick towers whose ruins you see today, built between the 7th and 13th centuries.
The temples were swallowed by forest after the kingdom declined and were mapped by French archaeologists from the late 1890s. UNESCO listed the site in 1999. A private My Son Sanctuary tour lets you appreciate what makes it special: the surrounding mountains, the sound of the stream, and the sense of a sacred place built away from the world, best felt before the tour groups arrive.
The temple groups and their carvings
Archaeologists divided the ruins into groups named with letters, and today the most complete are the B, C and D clusters, close together at the heart of the valley. Here you see gate towers, main sanctuaries with their stepped roofs, small treasuries for offerings and long meditation halls now used to display sandstone sculptures. The brickwork is remarkable: bricks were fired and fitted so tightly that no visible mortar holds them, and the decoration was carved directly into the walls.
Further on lie group A, heavily damaged by bombing in 1969, and the recently restored towers worked on by conservation teams from India and other countries. Your guide reads the stelae, points out dancing figures, makara sea monsters and Garuda birds, and explains how restoration is done today. With a private guide you can spend longer where you like; most guests take two to three hours on the site.
The early-morning private visit
Timing is everything at My Son. The valley has little shade and by late morning it can be very hot, while the coach groups arrive from mid-morning. Leaving Hoi An at 05:00 or 05:30, your private vehicle reaches the site soon after the gates open at about 06:00, when mist often hangs over the hills and the red bricks glow in the soft light. The drive passes rice fields and villages of Duy Xuyen district and takes about an hour.
From the ticket office an electric shuttle runs to the edge of the temple area, followed by an easy path. When the timing works, you can also watch a short traditional Cham dance in the site's pavilion. Is My Son worth visiting this way? For most travellers, the quiet early hours, combined with a guide who is only there for them, make it one of the highlights of central Vietnam.
Thu Bon River and the road back to Hoi An
Most guests return to Hoi An by car and are back at their hotel by mid-morning, often in time for a second breakfast and an afternoon in the Old Town. If you would like a gentler finish, ask us to arrange the optional return by boat along the Thu Bon River, at extra cost. The boat ride takes about an hour and drifts past fishing nets, sand banks, vegetable gardens and riverside villages.
The Thu Bon is the river that made Hoi An rich: for centuries goods from the highlands and from My Son's region floated down it to the trading port, where merchant ships from many countries anchored. Arriving by water near the Old Town is a lovely way to link the Cham past with the port town that followed. Tell us your wish when booking and we will plan the timing.
