My Son Sanctuary: the Cham temple complex
My Son Sanctuary is a group of brick temple towers built between the 4th and 13th centuries by the kings of Champa, mostly to honour the Hindu god Shiva. Set in a forested valley about 40 kilometres from Hoi An, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and is the most important surviving Cham monument in Vietnam. People often call it the Angkor of Vietnam, and searching for a My Son Sanctuary tour from Hoi An is the easiest way to find it.
Many buildings were damaged in the war, but dozens of towers, carved stones and sculptures still stand in clusters named with letters, and the guide explains how the Cham built with fired bricks and how the sanctuary was used.
