Full Description

Mengening Temple, Tampaksiring

Pura Mengening, also spelled Mangening, lies in a wooded valley in Tampaksiring, in the Gianyar regency about forty minutes north-east of Ubud. Its spring is one of the sources of the sacred Pakerisan river, the same river valley that holds some of Bali's oldest monuments, and the water is considered holy by the Balinese. Beside the spring stands a restored stone candi shrine in the classical style, surrounded by moss-covered walls and tall trees.

Below the shrine, the spring fills a bathing pool lined with carved spouts, each pouring a steady stream of clear water. Compared with nearby Tirta Empul, Mengening Temple is smaller and much quieter, which is why many visitors and local families prefer it for melukat. Is Mengening Temple worth visiting? If you want to experience a purification ritual in a calm, natural setting, it is one of the best places in Bali. The visit with the ritual takes about one and a half to two hours.

The melukat purification ritual

Melukat is a Balinese Hindu ritual of spiritual cleansing, performed to wash away negative energy and restore balance before important moments or simply as a fresh start. At Mengening your guide helps you put on a sarong and sash, and explains the meaning of the canang offerings, small palm-leaf baskets of flowers, rice and incense, that are placed at the shrine before entering the water.

After a short prayer, you step into the pool and move from spout to spout, bowing your head under each stream and washing your face, following the order the guide shows you. The water is cool and you will get completely wet, so bring a towel and a change of clothes and wear modest swimwear under the sarong. Due to local custom, people who are menstruating may not enter the temple, and photography is limited in the sacred areas.

Balinese palm reading and fortune-telling

Palm reading has a long place in Balinese culture, where people traditionally consult readers and healers for guidance on family, work and important decisions. With the palm reading add-on, a local reader studies the lines of your hands and talks about your character, relationships and the path ahead, while your guide translates and adds cultural context.

The session continues with a fortune-telling reading by the same person, so the conversation flows naturally and you can ask your own questions. The readings are offered as a cultural experience and a moment of reflection, not as guaranteed predictions. Each session is personal and unhurried; many guests find it a thoughtful prelude to the purification ritual. Other add-ons, such as Polaroid photos, lunch at a local restaurant or a traditional massage, can be chosen at booking.

Tampaksiring and Tirta Empul

Tampaksiring is a small highland town known for its holy springs and its royal history. A few minutes from Mengening is Tirta Empul, Bali's most famous water temple, founded more than a thousand years ago, with its long rectangular pool and rows of spouts that draw large crowds every day. Depending on the day and conditions, your guide may arrange the ritual at Tirta Empul instead, and the temple entry is covered in either case.

The road from the south passes through Ubud and the rice fields of Gianyar, and on the way your guide shares stories about Balinese religion, family temples and daily offerings. The best time to visit Mengening Temple is the morning, when the light is soft and the pool is quiet; the 09:00 departure is ideal. Wear comfortable non-slip shoes, as the temple has steps and wet stone surfaces.
