Overview
This Nara tour from Kyoto beats the crowds by starting early. Groups are small, with no more than 12 guests, and the guide brings Nara's 8th-century history to life at every stop. Full Description
Nara day trip from Kyoto: why start early
Nara was Japan's capital from 710 to 784, and its temples and shrines are protected together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only about an hour by train from Kyoto or Osaka, it is the most popular day trip in the region, which is exactly why timing matters: by late morning tour buses fill the main streets and the paths to Todai-ji become crowded.
This tour leaves early so you reach the sights in calm morning light, when photos are clearer and the deer are relaxed. On the Kyoto departure your guide meets you at the Central Ticket Gate of Kyoto Station and travels with you on the public train, explaining what lies ahead; the fare to Nara is included. Return transport is not, which gives you the freedom to stay longer in Nara or travel on.
Kofuku-ji Temple
Kofuku-ji was moved to the new capital in 710 as the family temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan, and at its height it counted well over a hundred buildings. Today its open grounds sit right beside Nara Park, making it the natural first stop of the walk. Highlights include the rebuilt Central Golden Hall, completed in 2018 in its original 8th-century style, and the Eastern Golden Hall.
Kofuku-ji's five-storey pagoda, around 50 metres tall, is one of Japan's tallest wooden pagodas and the symbol of Nara's skyline; it is currently undergoing a long restoration, so expect scaffolding. Your guide uses about 30 minutes here to explain how Buddhism arrived in Japan and why Nara's temples were once so powerful that the government moved the capital away from them.
Kasuga Taisha Shrine
Founded in 768, Kasuga Taisha is Nara's most important Shinto shrine and one of the most atmospheric places in Japan. The approach climbs gently through ancient forest lined with moss-covered stone lanterns, and inside the bright vermilion corridors hang rows of bronze lanterns donated over the centuries. All of them are lit only twice a year, during the lantern festivals in February and August.
This is the longest stop of the tour, around one hour, and the early start pays off here: the forest paths are often almost empty in the morning. Behind the shrine rises the Kasugayama Primeval Forest, left untouched for centuries for religious reasons. Your guide explains the shrine's link with the deer, which are believed to be messengers of the gods.
Nara Park and its deer
Nara Park is the green heart of the city, a wide expanse of lawns, ponds and old trees connecting the temples and shrines. It is famous for its sika deer, which roam freely and are protected as a national natural treasure. Many of them have learned to bow in exchange for the special deer crackers sold from small stands, a scene that delights visitors of every age.
Your guide shares tips for meeting the deer safely: feed only the crackers, hold them out calmly, and keep maps and paper out of reach, since the deer will try to eat them. Around 30 minutes here leaves time for photos before the walk continues to Todai-ji. Is Nara deer park worth visiting? In the quiet of the morning, few experiences in Japan are more charming.
Todai-ji and the Great Buddha
Todai-ji is the highlight of any Nara tour. You enter through the Nandaimon, a vast wooden gate guarded by two fierce wooden guardian statues about eight metres tall, then reach the Daibutsuden, the Great Buddha Hall. Rebuilt in 1709, it remains one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, even though it is a third smaller than the original.
Inside sits the Great Buddha, a bronze statue around 15 metres high first completed in 752. Look out for the wooden pillar with a hole at its base said to be the size of the Buddha's nostril; squeezing through is believed to bring good fortune. Allow about an hour. The Todai-ji admission ticket is not included and is bought on the spot, so keep some cash ready.
