Full Description
Shibuya Scramble Crossing and the Hachiko Statue
The tour starts in Jingumae, between Harajuku and Shibuya, and soon rolls into Shibuya Scramble Crossing, where thousands of people cross from every direction at once under giant video screens. The crossing is one of the key settings of the 2006 film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and it has appeared in countless car films, racing games and music videos since.
You also stop for a short walk to the Hachiko Statue outside Shibuya Station, which honours the loyal Akita dog who waited at the station for his owner every day for years after the owner's death in the 1920s. It is Tokyo's favourite meeting point. Cruising through Shibuya at night, with the neon reflected on the car's bodywork, is the moment most guests remember first.
Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo waterfront
From central Tokyo the convoy heads to the Rainbow Bridge, the white suspension bridge opened in 1993 that links Shibaura with the man-made island of Odaiba. At night its towers and cables are lit up, and crossing it gives wide views over the water to the illuminated skyline, the port and the city lights stretching along the shore.
This is one of the most photogenic drives in Tokyo, and the upper deck of the bridge carries the expressway, so you cross it in your sports car rather than on foot. The guide points out the landmarks along the waterfront and shares stories of Tokyo's car culture and the tuning scene that grew up around these night roads.
Daikoku Parking Area: Japan's legendary car meet
The highlight for most car fans is the Daikoku Parking Area, a large expressway rest area on an island interchange near Yokohama, ringed by spiralling ramps. For decades it has been the meeting place of Japan's car enthusiasts, and on a good night you may see classic Japanese sports cars, heavily modified builds, drift cars and exotic supercars parked side by side.
You spend about 45 minutes here with your guide, walking among the cars, taking photos and chatting with local owners. The scene changes every night, and occasionally the parking area is closed when it gets too crowded; if so, the guide adapts the route and still explains the culture. Please do not sit on or touch the cars, as many are owners' pride and joy.
The Wangan expressway and a giant tuning store
Part of the drive follows the Wangan, the bayshore section of Tokyo's urban expressway, a long, wide road of bridges and tunnels that became famous in Japanese car culture as the setting of legendary night runs. Your guide introduces the history of Japanese performance cars and the tuning world while you feel the sound and power of the car on the open road. For safety, there is no street drifting.
The convoy also stops for about 30 minutes at a huge car-parts and tuning megastore in Shinonome, a favourite of Tokyo's car enthusiasts, with aisles of wheels, body kits, steering wheels and accessories. Even if you are not shopping, it shows how deep Japan's modification culture really goes.
Tokyo Tower: the final photo stop
The tour ends at Shiba Park beneath Tokyo Tower, the orange and white lattice tower completed in 1958 and standing 333 metres tall. Lit up at night, it makes a dramatic backdrop for a last set of photos with the cars, and the guides help with photo and video at each stop so you leave with great shots.
After the photos you are dropped off at your hotel or at a set point in central Tokyo. The default evening ride starts between 17:30 and 19:00 and lasts about 3 hours. If you prefer, you can book a seat with priority for a classic 1990s modified coupé, a ride in a high-performance modern sports car, the late-night convoy with the Umihotaru rest area in the middle of the bay, or a private car just for your group.
