Full Description

Lake Yamanaka and Hirano Beach

The first stop is Lake Yamanaka, the largest of the Fuji Five Lakes and the one set highest, at almost 1,000 metres above sea level. Its eastern shore at Hirano Beach looks straight across the water to the broad silhouette of Mount Fuji, and swans often glide near the reeds, which is why locals call it Swan Lake.

You have about 40 minutes for a quiet walk along the shore and photos of the mountain over the water. Early in the day the lake is often calm and the air clearer, so this first stop is one of the best chances of a sharp view. In winter the shore can be frosty and in late autumn the hills around the lake glow with colour.

Fujiyoshida street view and the Chureito Pagoda

Next comes a short stop in Fujiyoshida at a straight street that seems to run right into the base of Mount Fuji, one of the trending photo spots around the mountain, where the peak towers above everyday shops and houses. It takes about 20 minutes and makes a fun contrast to the lake scenery.

Then you spend about an hour at Arakurayama Sengen Park, setting of the five-storey Chureito Pagoda. Climb the long staircase through the woods, nearly 400 steps, to the viewing deck for the classic image of the red pagoda with the snow-capped mountain behind it, perhaps the most famous view of Mount Fuji. Cherry blossoms in early April and red maples in autumn make it even more striking.

Oshino Hakkai: the spring ponds of Mount Fuji

Oshino Hakkai is a small village between Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi known for its eight ponds of crystal-clear spring water. The water comes from Mount Fuji's snowmelt, filtered for years through layers of volcanic rock, and it is so clear you can see every water plant and fish. The ponds are part of the Mount Fuji UNESCO World Heritage site.

Around them stand old thatched-roof houses, a water mill and small stalls selling grilled snacks, rice cakes and fresh vegetables. You have about an hour here, the main lunch stop of the day, so you can eat at your own pace and stroll the lanes. Is Oshino Hakkai worth visiting? It is one of the most charming places around Fuji, especially on a clear day.

Lake Kawaguchi and Oishi Park

Before the final stop, the tour makes a quick 20-minute photo break near Kawaguchiko Station at a well-known street corner where Mount Fuji appears to rise right above a small convenience store, a shot that became famous online. It is also a handy moment to pick up a drink or snack.

The day ends at Oishi Park on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the best Lake Kawaguchi viewpoints for Mount Fuji. A lakeside path runs past seasonal flower beds, lavender in early summer and kochia bushes that turn red in autumn, with the mountain mirrored in the water beyond. You have about 40 minutes before the drive back to Tokyo at around 16:00.
