Full Description

The kenbu dojo in Higashiyama

The class takes place in a dedicated kenbu dojo on the basement floor of a building near Sanjo and Hanamikoji, in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. The location is ideal: Gion's teahouse lanes and Yasaka Shrine are a short walk south, and the Kamo River and Sanjo stations lie just to the west, so it fits easily into a day of sightseeing.

Inside, the space is simple and focused, with a practice floor and a small stage for performances. There is no waiting room and no space for large luggage, and only booked participants can enter, as observation is not allowed. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, as the costume goes on over them.

The samurai class

The lesson starts with a short film on the basics of the samurai, the warrior class that ruled Japan for centuries until the late nineteenth century. You then put on your costume and take up the sword. Your instructor first teaches the bow, the gesture of respect that opens and closes all training, before moving on to drawing the blade and returning it to its scabbard.

Step by step you practise the stylised strikes and footwork of kenbu, then learn how to show respect to your opponent with the sword. The class lasts about 75 minutes and is designed for beginners, with clear instructions in English. Safety comes first, so follow your instructor's directions throughout; children from 5 to 10 are welcome but do best if they have some martial-arts experience.

Kenbu, the art of sword dance

Kenbu combines sword technique with dance, performed to recited classical poetry. It grew in popularity after the samurai class was abolished, keeping their spirit, posture and movements alive as a performing art. Each piece tells a story through precise, powerful gestures with sword and fan.

In the default option you watch a 30-minute kenbu performance with commentary from a sword-dance instructor, explaining the meaning of the movements and the history behind them. The 1.5-hour option includes a 10-minute mini performance instead. Seeing the art performed after your own class helps you appreciate how much discipline lies behind each movement.

Costume, photos and certificate

Part of the fun of this samurai experience in Kyoto is the costume: layered kimono and hakama trousers in the style of the warrior class. During a short photo shoot you pose with your sword in dynamic stances, and your instructor helps you get the posture right for the camera.

At the end you bow to your instructor and receive a certificate of achievement, together with a tenugui, the traditional Japanese cotton towel, as a souvenir. Morning classes at 10:00 and 11:20 and afternoon classes at 14:45 and 16:15 make it easy to combine with a walk through Gion or along Pontocho afterwards.
