Full Description
Himeji Castle, the White Heron
Himeji Castle is Japan's finest surviving castle and was one of the first sites in the country to be listed by UNESCO, in 1993. Its white plastered walls and layered roofs give it the nickname White Heron Castle, and its main keep, completed in the early seventeenth century, is surrounded by smaller keeps and a maze of paths designed to confuse attackers.
If you search for a Himeji Castle day tour from Osaka, this is the highlight. Our guide takes you around the grounds. Entry to the interior of the main keep is bought separately at the castle on the day. The best time to visit is spring for cherry blossom or autumn for the leaves.
Koko-en Garden beside the castle
Koko-en is a Japanese garden built in the 1990s on the site of former samurai residences, using Himeji Castle as its backdrop. It is made up of nine separate gardens, including a pond garden, a pine garden and a tea garden, each with a different mood.
It is a peaceful counterpoint to the castle and a favourite location for historical films. Entry to Koko-en is not included in our default option and is paid separately, so decide on the day whether to spend your free time here or elsewhere.
Arima Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns
Arima Onsen is a hot spring town in the hills of Kobe that is counted among the oldest in Japan, and it is famous for its two kinds of water: the reddish gold spring and the clear silver spring. Narrow streets lead past traditional inns, small shops and the sound of streams.
You can walk through the town, visit the public spots and try local snacks such as carbonated water crackers. Entry to the hot spring baths is not included, and some baths do not admit visible tattoos, so check the rules if you plan to bathe. Many visitors simply enjoy the atmosphere of Arima Onsen on a day trip from Osaka.
Mount Rokko and the Rokkosan Garden Terrace
Mount Rokko is the mountain range behind Kobe, and Rokkosan Garden Terrace on the summit area, at about 880 metres, has several observation decks with wide views. On clear days you see the Akashi Strait, Awaji Island and the whole Osaka Plain.
We stop here for about thirty minutes, enough for photos, a walk around the terrace and a look at the small shops. It is much cooler at the top than in Osaka, so bring a light jacket, and remember that views depend on the weather and the time of day.
