Leaving Tokyo Station at 07:30 (or Shinjuku at 08:00) in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking guide, you start in Hakone on the south side: the calm waters of Lake Ashi, a ride on the Hakone Ropeway high above the steaming Owakudani valley, and time at the volcanic vents where eggs are boiled black. Then you cross to the north side of Fuji for the crystal spring ponds of Oshino Hakkai and the climb to Chureito Pagoda, the classic view of the five-storey pagoda framed against the peak. It is a shared tour of about 10 hours; the ropeway ticket is included, meals and the Lake Ashi boat are not.

Full Description

Lake Ashi in Hakone

Lake Ashi, or Ashinoko, fills part of the caldera of the Hakone volcano and is the scenic heart of Hakone. Surrounded by forested ridges, it reflects the sky on calm days, and on clear mornings the snowy cone of Mount Fuji rises above the far shore. Near the southern end, the vermilion torii of Hakone Shrine stands in the shallow water, one of the most photographed sights in the area.

The first stop of this Hakone day tour is a short break of about 15 minutes by the lake for photos and fresh mountain air. Pirate-style sightseeing boats cross the lake, but the boat ticket is not included in this tour. If you are planning a Hakone day trip from Tokyo, this stop gives you the classic lake view without the time a full cruise requires.

Hakone Ropeway

The Hakone Ropeway is one of the most scenic cable-car lines in Japan, linking Lake Ashi with the volcanic slopes above it. Gondolas glide high over forests and then over Owakudani itself, where white sulphur steam pours from the bare yellow rock below, while Lake Ashi spreads out behind you and, on a clear day, Mount Fuji appears on the horizon.

The ropeway ticket is included in this tour, and the ride takes about 30 minutes. It is the best way to understand the landscape: from above you see how the old caldera, the lake and the still-active volcanic valley fit together. Keep your camera ready on the Fuji side of the gondola when the weather is clear.

Owakudani, the Great Boiling Valley

Owakudani was created around 3,000 years ago when an eruption of the Hakone volcano collapsed part of the mountain. Today it is an active volcanic zone where steam vents hiss, the air smells of sulphur and the ground is streaked yellow and white with minerals. Walking along the viewing areas, you feel the raw energy of the earth under your feet.

Owakudani is famous for kuro-tamago, eggs boiled in the hot spring water until their shells turn black from iron and sulphur. Local legend says that eating one adds seven years to your life, and buying a bag is a Hakone ritual. You have about 30 minutes here for photos, the black eggs and a look at the volcanic slopes. Access can occasionally change with volcanic activity levels; your guide adapts the plan if needed.

Oshino Hakkai spring ponds

Crossing to the north side of Mount Fuji, you reach Oshino Hakkai, a village of eight spring-fed ponds at the foot of the mountain. Snowmelt from Fuji filters slowly through layers of volcanic rock for many years before emerging here as astonishingly clear water, so clean that it is drinkable. The ponds are part of the Fujisan UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wooden walkways lead past ponds of different shades, from the mirror-like Okama Pond to the deep blue of the so-called Bottomless Pond, while thatched-roof houses, water wheels and small stalls selling grilled rice cakes and local snacks complete the picture. With about 45 minutes here, you can stroll, photograph Fuji reflected in the water and pick up a snack, since lunch is not included.

Arakurayama Sengen Park and Chureito Pagoda

The final highlight is the view that appears on countless posters of Japan: the red five-storey Chureito Pagoda with Mount Fuji rising behind it. The pagoda stands on the hillside of Arakurayama Sengen Park above the town of Fujiyoshida and was built in 1963 as a peace memorial. Reaching the upper viewing deck means climbing a long flight of nearly 400 steps, so take your time.

On the way you pass Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, founded in the early 8th century, with its torii and old trees. In spring the park is filled with cherry blossoms, in autumn with red and gold maples, and winter brings the clearest views of a snow-capped Fuji. You spend around an hour across the park, shrine and pagoda before the return drive to Tokyo.
