Overview
This three-hour guided tour lets you drive a small Japanese electric car around Lake Kawaguchiko, the most visited of the Fuji Five Lakes. After a transfer from Kawaguchiko Station and a safety briefing, you follow your English-speaking local guide in a small convoy for about 20 kilometres along the lakeshore, stopping at four to six scenic spots for photos of the water, the flower parks and, when the weather allows, Mount Fuji. Most cars are single-seaters, with a few two-seaters, and drivers need a valid International Driving Permit; children and non-drivers ride in the guide's car. It is a fun, different way to see the lake for couples, friends and families, with tours in the early morning, late morning and afternoon.

Full Description
Lake Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchiko is the second-largest of the Fuji Five Lakes and the easiest to reach from Tokyo, lying at about 830 metres on the northern side of Mount Fuji. Its shoreline is around 20 kilometres long, which makes it perfect for a loop by small electric car. The north shore faces the mountain directly across the water, and on still days the summit is reflected in the lake, a view the Japanese call 'upside-down Fuji'.
The best time to visit Lake Kawaguchiko for clear Fuji views is from November to February, when the air is cold and dry. Spring brings cherry blossoms along the shore in April, and November turns the maple corridors red and gold. In summer the lake is green and lively, but the mountain is often hidden by haze, and views can never be guaranteed.
Oishi and the north shore
The tour's start point is in the Oishi district on the north shore, close to Oishi Park, where a long flower corridor runs beside the water with Mount Fuji directly opposite. The planting changes with the seasons: lavender from late June to July, kochia bushes that turn bright red in October and autumn colours in November. Nearby lakeside paths and small piers are favourite photo spots.
Your guide chooses the stops of the day according to the light, the season and the traffic, so the route can vary, but it typically includes flower parks, quiet viewpoints and local corners that most visitors pass by. Many people ask whether Oishi Park is worth visiting: for its view across the lake to Fuji, it is one of the classic places in the area.
Driving the electric mini car
The cars are compact, fully electric Japanese mini cars, mostly single-seaters with a few two-seaters, and they move quietly at modest speeds on local roads. Before setting off you receive a safety briefing, your licences and passport are checked, and the guide explains the route. Remember that traffic in Japan drives on the left, and the convoy stays together throughout, with the guide's car in front.
To drive you need a valid International Driving Permit in the 1949 Geneva Convention booklet format; card-style permits are not accepted, and certain countries' national licences with an official Japanese translation are also valid. If you do not have one, cannot drive or are travelling with children, you can ride in the guide's regular car and still join the photo sessions with the mini cars.
How to get to Kawaguchiko and what is nearby
Kawaguchiko Station is the hub of the Fuji Five Lakes area. From Shinjuku in Tokyo the highway bus takes about two hours, and trains via Otsuki take a little longer. The tour meets at bus stop 10 outside the tourist information centre beside the station, so it is easy to combine with a day trip or an overnight stay in the area.
Within a short distance of the lake are the Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida, with its famous view of the pagoda and the mountain, and the spring-fed ponds of Oshino Hakkai, part of the Fujisan World Heritage Site. With the morning tour you still have the afternoon free for these sights, and our team can help arrange private transfers in the area.
