Full Description
The Mount Fuji Panorama Ropeway ride
The Mount Fuji Panorama Ropeway, long known to locals by the name of the hill it climbs, runs from a station near the eastern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko up the wooded slope of Mount Tenjo. The cabins rise steeply above the treetops, and in about three minutes the lake opens out beneath you, with the town of Fujikawaguchiko spread along its shore.
It is one of the easiest ways to gain height in the Fuji Five Lakes area, with no hiking needed, which makes it popular with families and older travellers. Cabins run continuously during opening hours, and you can ride back down whenever you are ready. Is the Kawaguchiko ropeway worth visiting? For the view over the lake and toward the mountain, yes, especially on a clear morning.
Mount Tenjo summit, its bell and its folk tale
The summit area on Mount Tenjo has several viewing decks facing south toward Mount Fuji and north over the lake. The bell of Mount Tenjo hangs on the main terrace, and visitors ring it for good fortune with the mountain behind them. A small shrine and playful statues recall an old Japanese folk tale of a clever rabbit and a mischievous raccoon dog, said to be set on this very hill.
From the deck, Mount Fuji rises about 20 kilometres to the south, but views are never guaranteed because cloud often gathers around the summit as the day warms. Most visitors spend 30 to 60 minutes at the top. Those who like walking can follow the forest trail down to the lakeshore in about 40 minutes instead of riding back.
Kawaguchiko ropeway opening hours and best time to visit
Time slots on this ticket run every hour from 8:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon, and the ropeway closes earlier in the short winter days. Operation can be suspended in strong wind or thunderstorms, and short maintenance closures happen during the year. Weekends, holidays and the cherry-blossom and autumn-colour seasons bring the longest queues at the station.
The best time to visit for Fuji views is early in the morning, ideally on a clear day between late October and February, when the air is driest. Spring brings cherry blossom along the lakeshore in April, and November turns the slopes red and gold. In summer the mountain is often hidden by haze, yet the lake view and cooler air at the top remain a pleasant break.
How to get to the Panorama Ropeway
The lower station and ticket desk are near the eastern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko, in the Azagawa area of Fujikawaguchiko, about 15 minutes' walk from Kawaguchiko Station. The local sightseeing buses that circle the lake also stop close by. From Tokyo, highway buses from Shinjuku reach Kawaguchiko Station in about two hours.
At the ticket desk, show the official QR code we send you to receive your paper return ticket. The ride combines easily with a lake cruise from the nearby pier, Oishi Park on the north shore, the Chureito Pagoda or Oshino Hakkai. Haqqi Tours can arrange a private car with driver around the Fuji Five Lakes, or a private transfer from Tokyo or Hakone.
