Full Description

Osaka Castle Main Tower and its history

Osaka Castle was begun in 1583 by the Toyotomi clan, who were then unifying Japan, and its great tower was covered in gold leaf to display their power. The castle fell during the sieges of 1614 and 1615, and the new shogunate rebuilt it on the same site, burying the old walls under fresh earth. Lightning destroyed that second tower in 1665, and the site stood without one for more than two and a half centuries.

The present Main Tower was rebuilt in 1931 in reinforced concrete, paid for by donations from the people of Osaka, and was restored in 1997. Its white walls, green copper tiles and gilded tigers and fish ornaments recreate the original style, and it is now a registered cultural property. Is Osaka Castle worth visiting? It is the city's defining landmark, and the tower is the best place to understand its story.

Museum floors and the observation deck

Inside the tower, floors two to seven form a history museum. You see helmets, armour, swords, letters and painted folding screens, including a famous screen of the summer siege of 1615 recreated in miniature figures, and detailed dioramas of life and battles in the castle's early days. Displays are labelled in English, and a lift runs from the entrance to the fifth floor, with stairs above for most visitors and assistance for wheelchair users.

The eighth floor is an open-air observation deck about 50 metres above the ground, with the golden ornaments of the roof close above your head. From here you look down on the moats and stone walls and out over the skyscrapers of Osaka Business Park and the city beyond. Plan about an hour in the tower; the deck is lovely in late afternoon light.

Toyotomi Ishigaki Museum

Opened in 2025, the Toyotomi Ishigaki Museum shows one of the most important archaeological finds in Osaka. In 1984 excavations deep beneath the present castle grounds uncovered a stone wall from the original Toyotomi-era castle, proving that the earlier fortress lay intact under the rebuilt one. The museum lets you see this wall in place, protected underground, with projections and panels that explain how the two castles fit together.

The visit takes about 20 to 30 minutes and adds real depth to the Main Tower: you see how the first castle's walls were built from rough, uncut stones stacked by hand, compared with the huge squared blocks of the later walls around you in the park. Your ticket covers one entry, and the museum stands within the inner citadel a short walk from the tower.

Osaka Castle Park and planning your visit

The Main Tower stands in Osaka Castle Park, a green area of more than 100 hectares with wide moats, massive stone walls and gates such as Otemon and Sakuramon. Inside Sakuramon, look for Tako-ishi, the largest stone in the castle walls. The plum grove blooms in February, Nishinomaru Garden and the moats turn pink with cherry blossoms in early April, and ginkgo trees colour the park gold in late November.

If you are wondering how to get to Osaka Castle, the closest stations are Osakajokoen on the JR Loop Line, and Tanimachi 4-chome and Morinomiya on the subway, each about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from the tower. Osaka Castle opening hours are usually 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry 30 minutes earlier, longer in some seasons, and it closes from 28 December to 1 January. Weekday mornings are quietest.
