Full Description
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park sits at the centre of the city, at the spot where the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. The Atomic Bomb Dome, the ruined shell of a former exhibition hall, has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands as a powerful symbol of peace.
On a Hiroshima day trip from Osaka, this is the most moving stop. Our guide explains the events of that day and the park's memorials, including the Cenotaph and the Children's Peace Monument, and allows time to walk quietly and reflect. The visit takes about half an hour.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
The Peace Memorial Museum is the main place to understand what happened in Hiroshima and why the city has become a voice for a world without nuclear weapons. Its exhibits include personal belongings, photographs and testimonies from survivors, and the displays are presented with care.
Many travellers ask whether the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is worth visiting. It is, but it can be emotional, so we allow about one hour and let you move at your own pace. Entry is included in our default option, and the guide adds context before and after.
Miyajima Island and the ferry crossing
After lunch we take the coach to the ferry terminal and cross to Miyajima Island, a short ferry ride of about ten minutes across the Seto Inland Sea. Miyajima has been regarded as a sacred island for centuries, and its wooded hills, deer and quiet lanes make it feel far from the city.
If you are planning a Miyajima day tour from Osaka, this is the easy way to do it, as tickets and connections are arranged for you. The ferry is included, and there is free time on the island to walk, photograph and explore at your own pace.
Itsukushima Shrine and the floating torii gate
Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose buildings and walkways are built over the water. Its great vermilion torii gate appears to float at high tide and can be approached across the sand at low tide, and it is one of the most photographed sights in Japan.
The best time to visit Itsukushima Shrine depends on the tide, so we plan around it as far as the schedule allows. Entry to the shrine is included in our default option, and the visit takes about an hour, plus free time on the island.
The Shinkansen ride and Hiroshima-style lunch
The Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima takes about an hour and a half, which makes a day trip realistic. Our staff meet you at the departure station, give you your tickets and help you board; they do not travel with you on the train, and your guide meets you in Hiroshima.
Lunch is Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a layered savoury pancake with cabbage, noodles and pork. Please tell us in advance about any allergies or dietary needs, since no-pork and no-egg versions are available on request but cannot be changed on the day.
