Full Description

Lake Kawaguchi

Lake Kawaguchi, or Kawaguchiko, is the most visited of the Fuji Five Lakes and the best base for views of the mountain's northern face. On calm mornings Fuji is mirrored in the water, a sight known in Japan as Sakasa Fuji, or upside-down Fuji. The lakeside town has museums, cafes and easy promenades along the shore.

This Lake Kawaguchiko tour gives you about 90 minutes in the area, including the ropeway and Tenjoyama Park, with time to stroll by the water. How to get to Lake Kawaguchi from Tokyo on your own usually means a long bus or train journey with transfers; on this tour our vehicle takes you directly, around two hours each way depending on traffic.

Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway and Tenjoyama Park

The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway lifts you from the lakeside to the top of Mount Tenjo in about three minutes, climbing to a viewing area at roughly 1,000 metres. As the gondola rises, Lake Kawaguchi opens beneath you and Mount Fuji fills the view across the water. The ropeway ticket is included in this tour.

At the top, Tenjoyama Park is full of playful touches: tanuki and rabbit figures from a local folk tale, a small Rabbit Shrine, a heart-shaped bell that couples ring for luck, and a swing that seems to launch you towards Fuji. Terraces offer some of the widest Fuji views in the region. The ropeway closes for annual inspection from 7 to 18 December 2026, when the tour visits the thatched village of Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba instead.

Oishi Park on the northern shore

Oishi Park stretches along the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, with flower beds and a lakeside path set directly opposite Mount Fuji. Its appeal changes with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, purple lavender in early summer, and in autumn the round kochia bushes that turn a fiery red, making it one of the best places to photograph Fuji with flowers in the foreground.

Beside the park, the Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center sells local fruit, sweets and crafts and has a cafe, making this 45-minute stop a good moment for a snack or ice cream with a view. Is Oishi Park worth visiting? On a clear day, the combination of flowers, lake and mountain is one of the most beautiful scenes of the whole trip.

Oshino Hakkai

Oshino Hakkai is a small village at the foot of Mount Fuji built around eight ponds fed by springs. The water comes from Fuji's snowmelt, filtered underground through volcanic rock for many years, which is why it is so clear that you can see every water plant and fish. The ponds belong to the Fujisan UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You have about an hour here to wander the wooden walkways, admire the reflections of Fuji, and browse stalls selling grilled rice cakes, sweet potato mochi and other local treats. Thatched-roof farmhouses and old water wheels give the village a timeless atmosphere. Bring some cash, as many small shops do not accept cards, and lunch is not included on this tour.

Chureito Pagoda and Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine

The tour ends at Arakurayama Sengen Park, setting of the most famous view of Mount Fuji: the vermilion five-storey Chureito Pagoda framed against the peak, with the town of Fujiyoshida spread below. The pagoda was built in 1963 as a peace memorial, and nearly 400 steps lead to the viewing deck above it. In early April the park becomes one of Japan's great cherry blossom spots.

On the way up you pass Arakura Fuji Sengen Shrine, founded in the early 8th century, its torii and ancient trees offering their own frame for photos. You have about an hour here, enough for the climb, the shrine and plenty of pictures. What is the best time to visit Chureito Pagoda? Morning light is softest, but late afternoon on this tour brings warm colours on clear days.
