Overview

This private Kyoto day tour takes you through the city's great temples, shrines and old streets in a luxury air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking driver-guide who explains every stop. Because the vehicle is only for your party, you set the pace, linger where you like and skip what you do not need. Full Description

Fushimi Inari Taisha: the vermilion gates

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of the Inari deity, honoured for rice, business and prosperity, and the path up Mount Inari is lined with vermilion torii gates donated by companies and families over the centuries. Visitors often ask whether Fushimi Inari is worth visiting: it is, especially early in the day, before the lower gates fill with crowds. The grounds are open at all hours and there is no entrance fee for the main shrine.

On this private tour your driver-guide explains the stone foxes, the names written on the gates and the small sub-shrines along the way, and you decide how far to climb. The first stretch of gates takes about an hour; the full loop to the summit takes much longer, so we plan the rest of the day around the time you want here. Comfortable shoes are the one thing you must not forget.

Kiyomizu-dera, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka

Kiyomizu-dera, the Temple of Pure Water, clings to the Higashiyama hillside with a great wooden stage built without nails, looking over the city and over cherry or maple trees according to the season. Founded in the late eighth century, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the busiest temples in Japan. Opening hours run from early morning to late afternoon, with special evening openings in spring and autumn, and an entrance fee applies.

The approach is as memorable as the temple. Your driver-guide leads you through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the preserved lanes of wooden tea houses and craft shops, where it is easy to stop for photos or a sweet snack. This is the most crowded part of Kyoto, so starting early with a private driver who waits for you saves the long uphill walk and gives you more time inside the grounds.

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and Togetsukyo Bridge

Arashiyama, on the western edge of Kyoto, is where visitors come for the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, a path between tall bamboo stalks that sway and filter the light, and for Togetsukyo Bridge, the long bridge over the Katsura River with wooded mountains behind it. The best time to visit the bamboo grove is first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the path is quieter and the light is softest.

Because the district lies far from the central temples, reaching it by public transport takes planning; by private vehicle it is a smooth drive. Your driver-guide drops you close to the grove, tells you where to walk and where to take the best photographs, and collects you again. Lunch falls in this part of the day as free time, so you can choose any café or restaurant at your own speed.

Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion

Kinkaku-ji is a Zen temple whose upper floors are covered in gold leaf and reflected in a still pond. Built in the late fourteenth century as a retreat, it burned down in 1950 and was rebuilt in 1955. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, usually open from morning until late afternoon, and the entry ticket is bought at the gate.

The visit follows a one-way garden path and takes around forty minutes, which fits neatly into a full-day route. Late-afternoon light on the gold is a favourite for photographers, and your driver-guide knows the best viewpoints and how to avoid the tour-bus waves. If time and energy allow, ask to add Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion, for a quieter contrast.

Optional stops: Ginkaku-ji, Nishiki Market, Nijo Castle and Gion

The programme is customisable, so you can swap or add stops to match your interests. Popular choices include Ginkaku-ji and the stone paths around it, Nishiki Market, the covered lane of fresh produce, pickles and kitchen knives in central Kyoto, and Nijo Castle, the shogun's residence with its famous squeaking floors. In the evening many guests ask for Gion, the old geisha district around Hanamikoji.

Tell your driver-guide what you enjoy, whether gardens, castles, craft shops or photography, and the order of the day is rearranged to match. Opening hours, seasonal closures and traffic decide what is realistic in a single day, and we will tell you honestly if a combination is too tight. Entry tickets are paid separately at each site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this Kyoto tour really private?

Yes. The luxury air-conditioned vehicle and the English-speaking driver-guide are for your party only, with no strangers on board and no fixed group schedule.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

Yes. The itinerary is customisable. Tell your driver-guide which temples, gardens or photo spots matter most and the order is rearranged, within the limits of weather, traffic and opening hours.

How many people can join, and how many fit in the vehicle?

The tour is arranged for your own party, from solo travellers to families and small groups. Tell us your group size when you book and we confirm a vehicle with enough seats and luggage space.

Is the price per person or per group?

In the default option the price covers the vehicle and your party rather than each person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of every option and how it is charged.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included at hotels and addresses within the eligible area in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. The address is confirmed when you book.

What is included in the tour?

A private air-conditioned luxury vehicle, an English-speaking driver-guide with commentary at each stop, a customisable itinerary, and hotel pickup and drop-off. Entry tickets, meals and personal expenses are not included.

How long is the tour?

It is a full-day tour, starting at 08:00, 09:00 or 10:00. Visits last from about forty minutes to one hour at each main stop, plus a free lunch break and the drives between sites.

Is the tour suitable for children and for guests with reduced mobility?

Children are welcome and the private vehicle makes the day easy for families. The temples involve stairs and gravel, so tell us in advance about strollers, wheelchairs or limited mobility and we plan the stops accordingly.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes, socks, cash and a card for tickets and lunch, a camera, a charged phone and weather-appropriate clothing. Dress modestly for the temples.

What is the best time of day and season for this tour?

Start at 08:00 to reach Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera before the crowds. Spring and autumn are the most beautiful seasons but also the busiest; winter and early summer are quieter.

Can I add Nara to the day?

A separate private option covers Kyoto and Nara by luxury vehicle, where you design your own route and can add a guide. Choose it in the booking panel or ask our team.
