Full Description

The Story Bridge, Brisbane's heritage landmark

The Story Bridge is a steel cantilever bridge that opened in 1940 and links the inner-city suburbs of Kangaroo Point and Fortitude Valley across the Brisbane River. It is named after John Douglas Story, a public servant and a founder of the University of Queensland. At about 80 metres above the water at its highest point, it is one of the defining sights of the skyline.

For many visitors, a Story Bridge climb is the best answer to the question of what to do in Brisbane for an hour or two. You do not need to be an athlete: the route follows stairs and walkways built for the climb, and the pace is set by your group and Climb Leader.

The Story Bridge Adventure Climb experience

The climb lasts about 90 minutes. After check-in you are fitted with a climbing suit and a safety harness, and you leave personal items in a locker. The guide runs a short briefing, and you then climb in a group along the steel spans and up to the summit, stopping on the way to hear how the bridge was designed and built.

Cameras and phones are not carried during the climb for safety, so individual photos are taken for you and can be bought after the climb. Wear comfortable, flat, closed shoes. Tell the team at check-in about any health concerns before you start.

Views from the top of the bridge

From the summit you see the whole of central Brisbane: the river bending around the city, the high-rise towers of the CBD, the cliffs at Kangaroo Point, the green Botanic Gardens and the ferries crossing below. On a clear day the view stretches out over the suburbs towards Moreton Bay.

Because the view changes with the light, the best time to climb the Story Bridge depends on what you want. The day climb gives the clearest views, the twilight climb offers golden light as the city lights come on, and the night climb shows Brisbane sparkling after dark.

Day, twilight or night: choosing your climb

Each option has its own set of start times, so select your date in the booking panel to see what is open. The day climb runs through the morning and afternoon, the twilight climb starts in the early evening, and the night climb begins after dark. All three follow the same route and last about 90 minutes.

Check in at the Story Bridge Adventure Climb base on the day, using the details in your booking voucher, and arrive about 30 minutes before your start time. Individual photos are the only extra you may want to buy.
