Full Description

Two Brothers Hill (Morro Dois Irmãos)

Two Brothers Hill is the pair of twin peaks that rise above Leblon and Ipanema, and its summit stands at 533 metres above sea level. The hike to the top takes about an hour on a trail of roughly one and a half kilometres, with uphill sections, roots and uneven ground. It is one of the best hikes in Rio de Janeiro because the effort is short, but the reward is a full view of the South Zone.

From the summit you look down over Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana, and across the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas to Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado. Plan to spend around an hour at the top for photos and a rest. The Two Brothers Hill sunrise is a favourite, since the first light turns the beaches gold, but a daytime hike gives more time to enjoy the view.

Vidigal, the community at the foot of the hill

The trail begins in Vidigal, a hillside community between Leblon and São Conrado that has become known for its views and its creative energy. Your accredited guide explains everyday life, how the community grew and how the mountain and the city meet here. Walking with a local guide is the respectful way to visit, and it gives you context that you would not find on your own.

The starting point is at the Praça do Vidigal, and the uphill part to the trailhead is done by moto-taxi, a short ride of about five to ten minutes each way. Local transport is paid on the spot and is not included, so carry a little cash. Be sensitive when taking photos of people and homes, and ask your guide before you take pictures in the streets.

Viewpoints over Rocinha, Pedra da Gávea and Christ the Redeemer

On the way up, the trail passes viewpoints that show different faces of Rio. One looks across to Rocinha, one of the largest communities in Latin America, and to Pedra da Gávea and Pedra Bonita, the huge rock formations near São Conrado. Another opens towards the distant statue of Christ the Redeemer, so you can spot it from a completely new angle.

These viewpoints double as rest stops, and your guide will use them to explain the geography of the city, from the sea to the mountain forest. Bring water, since the climb is steady and hot in daytime. Photo and video support is included, so ask your guide to capture the summit views for you.

Choosing sunrise, morning or afternoon

There are three departures: an early sunrise start at 03:40, a morning slot at 08:30 and an afternoon slot at 15:30. Sunrise gives cool temperatures, soft light and fewer people, but you start in the dark and need a torch or head torch. The morning and afternoon slots are easier to fit into a normal day.

The whole experience lasts about three and a half hours: a short ride up, around an hour of hiking, time at the summit and roughly 45 minutes for the descent. Weather can change the plan, and your guide will decide if conditions are safe. If clouds cover the view, wait a little, since they often clear within minutes.
