Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is in Alajuela, about 17 km north-west of central San Jose; La Fortuna is about 130 km (3 to 3.5 hours), Monteverde about 150 km, Manuel Antonio about 165 km and Jacó about 100 km.
Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) is about 12 km west of Liberia in Guanacaste; Tamarindo is about 75 km, Papagayo about 55 km, La Fortuna about 140 km (around 3 hours) and Rio Celeste about 110 km.
Public buses run to La Fortuna from San Jose's bus terminals but not from the airport, and shared shuttles are the budget option; a private car from the terminal is the direct option for families, late arrivals and Monteverde or Tabacon, and the 3 to 3.5 hour drive can include a stop at the topiary garden in Zarcero.
Where to stay in La Fortuna
