Full Description

Cape Greco National Forest Park

Cape Greco, also spelled Cavo Greco, is the rugged peninsula at the south-eastern tip of the island and the centrepiece of the National Forest Park on the east coast. Cliffs of pale limestone drop to intensely blue water, and pine, juniper and wild herbs cover the headland. A jeep safari is the classic answer to how to see Cape Greco in a short time, because the tracks reach places that a rental car cannot.

At the top of the cape you find wide views over the sea, and on clear days you can see a long way along the coast. The guide chooses the route according to the day, and the drive can be dusty, so bring sunglasses and something to cover your hair if you wish. This is one of the best places in Cyprus for coastal scenery.

Sea caves and the Lovers Bridge

The coast around Ayia Napa is famous for its sea caves, hollows carved by waves in the limestone cliffs. On this safari you visit viewpoints above the caves and see how the water swirls inside them. Nearby stands a natural rock arch known as the Lovers Bridge, where visitors traditionally cross together for good luck.

Many travellers search for an Ayia Napa sea caves tour to combine sights with a swim, and the jeep safari does both by land. For a closer view, the guide points out where boat trips stop. Take care near cliff edges, especially with children, and stay behind the safety lines.

Forgotten churches and viewpoints

Along the coast are small stone chapels and abandoned churches, many of them dedicated to saints and some carved into or built close to the cliffs. The guide explains the local legends and the history of life on this coast, and the stops are short enough to keep the day moving. They give the landscape a human story, and they are lovely spots for photos.

The best time to visit for light and photos is generally the morning or late afternoon, when the sun is lower and the colours warmer. This is why two departure times are offered. Treat every chapel with respect, dress modestly if you go inside and do not leave litter.

Swimming stop and the 4x4 experience

The safari includes free time at a secluded beach or bay, with clear shallow water for a swim. Bring swimwear, a towel and some cash, because refreshments are available for purchase during the excursion, and watersports may be offered as an optional extra at the swimming stop. It is a relaxed break in a busy morning.

The vehicles are classic Land Rover Defenders, which are fun and go where other cars cannot, but they are not the most comfortable, and they have no air conditioning. Seat belts are fitted. Because the ride is bumpy, the trip is not recommended for anyone with back problems, and it is not suitable for babies under one year old.
