Full Description
Preparing at the Dive Centre and on the Boat
Your day starts with pickup from your hotel and a short drive to the dive centre in Hurghada, where you fill in a simple medical form and are fitted with a wetsuit, fins, mask and scuba set. The instructor explains how the equipment works, how to equalise your ears and the hand signals you will use underwater.
On the boat you practise breathing through the regulator at the surface before descending slowly along a guide line or the reef slope, always within arm's reach of your instructor. Many people ask whether intro diving in Hurghada is safe for non-swimmers: basic comfort in water helps, but the instructor controls your buoyancy and depth throughout.
Small Giftun and the Giftun Reefs
The Giftun Islands lie about 45 minutes by boat from Hurghada's marinas and are surrounded by some of the most popular dive sites in the northern Red Sea. Small Giftun, the smaller of the two islands, has sheltered reef walls and sandy patches in shallow water, ideal for a first dive.
Hard and soft corals grow in terraces here, sheltering schools of fish that barely notice divers. The water is famously clear, often with visibility of 20 metres or more, so even at shallow depth the view is spectacular. Beginners searching for the best place to try scuba diving in Hurghada will find these reefs welcoming and calm.
Abu Ramada Reef
Abu Ramada is a small island south of Giftun, and its southern reef is known to divers as the Aquarium because of the sheer density of fish. Gentle slopes, coral heads and light currents make it a favourite second dive for beginners, and the reef top is so shallow that it glows with sunlight.
Here you may see anthias clouds, butterflyfish, groupers hiding under ledges and clownfish in their anemones. Each intro dive lasts about 20 minutes underwater, followed by a surface interval of around 90 minutes on the boat with snacks and a hot drink. The exact sites are chosen on the day according to weather and sea conditions.
Red Sea Marine Life and the Day on Board
The Red Sea shelters more than a thousand species of fish, a large share found nowhere else. On an introductory dive you might meet the Red Sea clownfish, the colourful parrotfish crunching coral, a blue-spotted stingray on the sand or a turtle feeding on the reef.
Between dives lunch is served on board, and there is time to sunbathe or snorkel. Remember the golden rule: look, but never touch the coral or marine life. Is a discover scuba diving day worth it in Hurghada? For most beginners it is the highlight of their holiday and often the start of a lifelong hobby.
