Temppeliaukio Rock Church

Temppeliaukio Church, known as the Rock Church, is built directly into a hill of granite in the Töölö district of Helsinki. The architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen designed it, and it opened in 1969. It is a working Lutheran church and one of the most visited sights in the city, which is why a Temppeliaukio Rock Church ticket is often on a Helsinki first-timer's list.

Inside you stand in a space that feels more like a cave than a church, with the rough rock left exposed, and the drilling marks from construction still visible.

Rock, copper and light

The ceiling is a large copper-clad dome resting on the rock walls, and narrow skylights all around it let daylight in throughout the year. The bedrock is around two billion years old, and small trickles of meltwater run down the walls in spring. The altar wall is a natural split in the rock.
