Full Description
The Dune du Pilat, Europe's highest dune
The Dune du Pilat rises at the entrance of Arcachon Bay, about an hour's drive south-west of Bordeaux. Around 100 metres high, almost 3 kilometres long and some 500 metres wide, it is the highest sand dune in Europe and one of the most visited natural sites in France. It is formed by sand blown from the ocean and the sandbanks, and it moves slowly inland each year, burying the edge of the pine forest behind it.
Our guide leads you from the car park through the pines to the foot of the dune. In the main season a staircase is installed on the slope; at other times you climb on the sand itself, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes at a gentle pace. A private Dune du Pilat tour lets you choose your rhythm, rest when you need and stay at the top as long as the schedule allows.
The view from the top of the dune
From the crest the view is unforgettable. To the west, the Atlantic Ocean stretches to the horizon; just below lies the Banc d'Arguin, a protected sandbank and nature reserve where seabirds nest; across the channel you see the tip of the Cap Ferret peninsula with its lighthouse. To the east, the dark green Landes forest, the largest planted forest in Western Europe, rolls away as far as the eye can see.
Many travellers ask about the best time to visit the Dune du Pilat. Mornings are calmer and cooler, which is why this tour leaves Bordeaux at 9:30 am, and spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures and clear light. In summer the sand gets hot by midday, so bring sun protection; on windy days, sunglasses help against blowing sand.
Arcachon's Winter Town and Belle Époque villas
After the dune, the drive continues to Arcachon, a seaside resort that grew from a fishing village in the mid-19th century, when the railway from Bordeaux brought visitors seeking sea air. On the hill above the beach, the Winter Town was designed for guests who came for the healthy air of the pine forest in the colder months, with winding streets laid out to shelter the houses from the wind.
Its villas are a showcase of Belle Époque fantasy: Swiss chalets, neo-Gothic manors, Moorish arches and colonial verandas, each with carved woodwork, ceramic tiles and lush gardens. Our guide drives you slowly through these lanes and stops for photos, then down to the seafront of the Summer Town, with its long sandy beach, its pier and views across the calm water of the bay.
A traditional oyster-farming harbour on Arcachon Bay
Arcachon Bay is one of the great oyster-farming areas of France. The tour visits a traditional oyster harbour, where colourful wooden huts line small channels and flat-bottomed boats bring in the catch from the oyster beds at low tide. Out in the bay you may see the Bird Island and its wooden huts on stilts, a symbol of the lagoon.
Our guide explains how oysters are raised over several years and how the tides shape daily life on the bay. This is the place for lunch, at your own expense, in one of the simple waterside huts serving freshly opened oysters and other local seafood. Halal options are limited around the bay, so travellers with halal requirements may prefer seafood or a packed meal; our team can advise when you book.
The road through the Landes pine forest
How to get to the Dune du Pilat from Bordeaux? By car the trip takes about an hour each way, which is exactly why a private Dune du Pilat and Arcachon day trip from Bordeaux is so convenient: no train changes, no buses to the dune and no parking worries in high season. The road crosses the edge of the Landes forest, planted with maritime pines in the 19th century to fix the shifting sands and drain the marshes.
Our driver-guide shares stories about the forest, the resin collectors who once worked in it and the coastline's shifting sands. On the way back to Bordeaux you can relax in the air-conditioned vehicle, and we drop you at your hotel or address about five hours after pickup, with the afternoon free to enjoy the city.
