Full Description

Haghpat Monastery

Haghpat, founded in the 10th century in the forested Debed Canyon of northern Armenia, is one of the finest examples of medieval Armenian architecture. Together with nearby Sanahin it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.

Its main Church of the Holy Sign, the bell tower, the library and the carved khachkars (cross stones) sit on a hillside with wide mountain views. It is the first stop after the border and a peaceful introduction to Armenia's Christian heritage, which dates back to 301 AD, when Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity.

Dilijan, the Armenian Switzerland

Dilijan lies in a green valley surrounded by forested mountains, and its mild climate and spas earned it the nickname of Armenian Switzerland. The restored old quarter on Sharambeyan Street shows traditional wooden balconies and craft workshops.

The tour passes through the town and its national park, with time for a break. It is also a good place for lunch at your own cost, as meals are not included. Many travellers say the drive through Dilijan's forests is one of the most scenic parts of any Armenia day trip from Tbilisi.

Lake Sevan and Sevanavank

At about 1,900 metres above sea level, Lake Sevan is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world and is often called the jewel of Armenia. Its deep blue water changes colour with the light and weather.

On a peninsula above the shore stands Sevanavank, a monastery founded in 874 with two small dark-stone churches. Climbing the steps rewards you with sweeping views over the lake. The best time to visit Lake Sevan is from June to September, but the scene is beautiful in every season, including under snow.

Yerevan: Cascade, Mother Armenia and Republic Square

Yerevan, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, was founded as the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC. The Cascade is a giant white limestone stairway with gardens and sculptures; from the top, on clear days, snow-capped Mount Ararat appears across the border.

Above the city, the Mother Armenia statue watches over Victory Park. The tour ends in Republic Square, framed by pink tuff buildings, with free time to explore. Evening in Yerevan is lively, but remember the drive back to Tbilisi is long. Our guide will suggest where to find a quick coffee or snack before the group sets off again.
