Full Description
Museum Island: a UNESCO site in the heart of Berlin
Museum Island is a group of five museums on an island in the river Spree, built between 1830 and 1930 and listed by UNESCO in 1999 as a World Heritage site. It is one of the great museum complexes in Europe, and it sits beside the Berlin Cathedral, the Lustgarten and the Humboldt Forum, a short walk from Unter den Linden.
If you are asking how to get to Museum Island, take the S-Bahn to Hackescher Markt and walk five minutes, or take tram M1 or M4 to the same area, or walk from Alexanderplatz in about ten minutes. Because the museums are close together, you can plan a full day of visits with a single ticket.
The Neues Museum and Nefertiti
The Neues Museum houses the Egyptian and Nubian collections, and the star of the show is the painted bust of Queen Nefertiti, over three thousand years old, displayed in a room of her own. The building was badly damaged in the Second World War and reopened in 2009 after a careful restoration by David Chipperfield that keeps its scars visible.
Many visitors ask whether the Nefertiti bust is worth the trip. It is, and the museum also holds papyri, mummies and prehistoric objects. Allow about ninety minutes, and see the bust early in the day, before it gets crowded.
The Altes Museum and the Bode-Museum
The Altes Museum, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and opened in 1830, has a magnificent rotunda and displays Greek and Roman art, including vases, statues and jewellery. From outside, it is one of the most impressive neoclassical buildings in Berlin, with columns facing the Lustgarten.
The Bode-Museum, at the tip of the island, holds sculpture from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, Byzantine art and one of the largest coin collections in the world. Its baroque building, with a dome that dominates the northern end of the island, is worth seeing for its own sake.
The Alte Nationalgalerie and planning your day
The Alte Nationalgalerie, in a temple-like building, shows nineteenth-century painting and sculpture, from German romantics such as Caspar David Friedrich to French impressionists such as Monet and Manet. A special Friedrich exhibition is not included with this ticket.
The Pergamon Museum is temporarily closed for renovation, so it cannot be visited, although some of its collections are shown elsewhere. Opening days and late evenings differ from museum to museum, some museums use time slots, and the ticket is valid for one day only, so check your voucher and the booking panel. Students with ID and children have their own categories.
