Full Description

Sanssouci Palace, Frederick the Great's summer retreat

Sanssouci, meaning without worries, was built in 1745–1747 as a small summer palace for King Frederick II of Prussia. The single-storey rococo building sits at the top of six curved terraces, and its intimate rooms, such as the domed Marble Hall and the gilded Concert Room, show the king's love of music, philosophy and French culture.

The palace forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. Timed tickets sell out quickly in summer, so a Sanssouci Palace tour with entry included saves you the stress. Around 45 minutes inside is enough to see the state rooms with the audio guide.

Sanssouci Park and its terraces

Below the palace, the terraces descend to a great fountain and a park that stretches for about two kilometres, dotted with buildings such as the Chinese House, the Orangery and the vast New Palace at its western end. The simple grave of Frederick the Great lies on the upper terrace, where visitors often leave potatoes, a nod to the king who promoted the crop in Prussia.

On this tour you have about 20 minutes to stroll the gardens after the palace visit. The best time to visit Sanssouci is from May to September, when the fountains run and the flower beds are at their peak, though the park is lovely in autumn colours too.

Potsdam's Dutch Quarter and the Russian colony

Potsdam grew as a royal city, and its districts reflect the kings' taste for foreign styles. The Dutch Quarter, built in the 1730s and 1740s for Dutch craftsmen, has 134 red-brick gabled houses, the largest ensemble of its kind outside the Netherlands. Today it is full of cafés and small shops.

North of the centre lies Alexandrowka, a colony of carved wooden houses built in 1826–1827 for Russian singers who had stayed in Prussia after the Napoleonic wars. It is also part of the UNESCO site. The coach passes both districts while your guide explains how to get to Potsdam from Berlin and what else is worth a return visit.
